Medvedev, Sinner To Meet Again, This Time In Vienna Final
After meeting in the final at the start of October in Beijing, Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner will close the month with another final battle, this time indoors in Vienna, after both won straight setters on Saturday.
Medvedev improves to 9-4 against rival Stefanos Tsitsipas with a 6-4, 7-6(8-6) win over the 4th-seeded Greek.
The defending champion Medvedev finished with five aces, lost just 8 points on first serve, never lost serve and gained the lone break of the match in the first set for 4-3. Tsitsipas had three break chances in the 2-1 game in the first set, and none after that.
“I served well throughout the whole match,” Medvedev said to the ATP. “In general I am happy with how I served and put pressure on him on a lot of points. I had a lot of opportunities and he played well on them also. Generally, this pressure paid off at the end of the match.”
Sinner eased past Andrey Rublev by a similar score 7-5, 7-6(7-5).
Sinner trailed 4-2 in the first set but was able to break back when Rublev was asked to serve out the set. Then in the second, Sinner failed to serve it out at 5-4.
Sinner reaches his 13th final. He’s 9-3 in finals. Medvedev 36th final seeking title No. 21.
“Jannik is finishing really strong so will be interesting to see how the match goes,” Medvedev said.
Medvedev leads Sinner 6-1 losing only in Beijing.
