Rune Upset By Auger-Aliassime, Opens Door For Hurkacz In Basel
In a rematch of their 2022 Basel final, Felix Auger-Aliassime once again was victorious over Holger Rune in Switzerland with a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Dane.
Auger-Aliassime reaches his first final since winning Basel last year. And it was a much-needed after a rough 2023 season.
The Canadian finished with five aces and lost just five points on first serve. He broke Rune three times.
Auger Aliassime moves into his 14th career final. He is seeking his 5th career title.
With Rune out, Hubert Hurkacz closed the gap with the 20-year-old for the final spot in Turin. Hurkacz moved into the final with a tight 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7-5) win over Ugo Humbert.
Hurkacz slammed 23 aces but couldn’t deliver on his first two match points serving for it at 5-3 in the third. But Hurkacz, the breaker king, took the match in his 58th tiebreaker of the season.
And if Hurkacz wins Sunday, he’ll will be just 15 points behind Rune for the 8th spot in Turin.
