For the second time this month, Jannik Sinner denied Daniel Medvedev of a title, beating the Russian today in a tight contest in the Vienna final 7-6(9-7), 4-6, 6-3.

The 3 hour, 4 minute marathon was punctuated by a 30-point, 20-minute game at 2-1 in the third when Sinner broke. But Medvedev somehow got it right back however Sinner got the final break, thwarting two break points serving for the title at 5-3, 15-40.

“It took a lot of mental and physical stuff,” said Sinner to the ATP. “I think we both served very well the first set. I managed somehow to get back on serve when he was a break up, because I felt like he was serving really good. I found a way in the first set.

“Second set, I felt like he was trying to get into the rally a little bit more and I was hustling a little bit. In the third set I tried to step up a little bit. I had a lot of break points, I couldn’t use them and then at the end I used them so I’m very happy. Obviously to finish the match, it was really a mental thing, but I’m very happy about how I managed today and very happy for another title.”

The defending champion Medvedev had 13 aces but also eight double faults. And the Sinner power was too much in the end.

After losing his first six, Sinner has won two straight over Medvedev. The two have now met in four finals this year.

Sinner captures his 10th career title. This was his 13th career final. Medvedev was seeking his 21st career title.

“Big congrats to Jannik. It was a tough match, at one moment I thought I maybe could get you,” Medvedev told the crowd. “I didn’t manage to do it. As I said already three times this year, hopefully we can play more finals, maybe even this year. Big congrats to you, you’re playing great, finishing the year strong.”
