Mardy Fish Will Not Play In The US Open

The struggles continue for Mardy Fish. The 31-year-old withdrew from the US Open this morning due to ongoing health issues.

Fish hasn’t been right since the night after a loss to Juan Monaco in Miami last year when the American had to be rushed to the hospital because of a heart scare.
Fish is currently ranked No. 173 but has been as high as No. 7 in 2011. He hasn’t played a Grand Slam match this year and has played just six events on the ATP/Challenger tour.
After losing in the first round last week in Cincinnati, Fish said he would assess his career after the US Open.
“I think there’s going to be some sort of assessment period, maybe after the US Open, where I’ll kind of see how far‑‑ feel how far away I am to where I want to be,” Fish said last week. “I left ‑ with all these problems that I had health‑wise, I left the game in the top 10 in the world, and that’s pretty hard to deal with. It was very, very hard to get there and to stay there for a while, for a little while and to make the World Tour Finals and to do all those cool things.
“So it’s been very hard and very challenging to know that I had really no control over it.”
Fish has been seeing a psychiatrist since his abrupt US Open withdrawal last year and admitted to hardly leaving the house for three months while recovering.
“I’ve come a very, very long way,” he said. “It’s been a very slow process. Come an extremely long way. Like I said, it’s very hard to come back.
“When all this happened in sort of February, March kind of thing, I was in the top 10 in the world. That’s hard to take.”
This week in Winston-Salem Fish collected his 300th career match win in the first round over Evgeny Donskoy but yesterday in the second round retired late in the third set to Jarkko Nieminen with an undisclosed illness.
