Henin, Sharapova Face Serbian Challenge at French Open

Time for a little pre-work update on the tennis from Roland Garros. Today’s two women’s semis are a toss up. Both Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova are the slight favorites, but their Serbian opponents, Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic, can each steal a win. Could they both do it and set up an all-Serb final? I don’t see that happening, but i think one of them gets thru today at the French Open. ADHEREL

Bottom line, until Janko actually beats Henin – she’s 0-5 against the Belgian – you have to take Henin. Add that Justine’s won her last 19 at the French including 31 straight sets, and i’m taking Henin. In the other semifinal, Sharapova’s been no good on the clay while Ivanovic is fully capable of winning big matches on a big stage. Of course this will be Ana’s biggest match of her career, and if she keeps her composure I think she beats the slow-footed Sharapova. So i’ll take Ivanovic.

As for the men’s tomorrow, Rafael Nadal continues to look unbeatable while Roger Federer has been shaky at times. That said, I think Rafa downs Djokovic in straight sets and Davydenko gives Federer one hell of a match. I really want to pick Davydenko to pull the upset – i think he matches up real well with Federer on the clay – but in the end I’ll cave and take Roger. Davydenko’s only won one set in his last five meetings with The Fed (0-8 overall), so asking him to win three sets in one afternoon against Roger might be asking a little too much.

But would it be asking too much to see some competitive tennis matches from Paris? I think we finally get that today.

Shane Says:

Wow, spot on for the women’s semis. Nice work.

schtrumpf Says:

NO LIVE MEN’S SEMIS ON US TV????!!!!!????!!!!!

This country is finished.

John Says:

Sean, now that it’s Justine vs Ana, who do you like?

Justine won today 62, 62. Ana won 62, 61.

Looking at games WL% this tournament. Justine is 73-35 (68%), while Ana is 78-31 (72%). However, Justine’s were straight sets, while Ana had two 3 set matches. Justine should be more relaxed, since she’s won this before.

I’m picking Ana.

Giner Says:

Justine is the more experienced of the two, and is known for mental toughness. Many times has she stunningly come back from the brink of defeat. I pick Justine.

grendel Says:

Beast to triumph over beauty. Momma’s girl to win. Allez! I have su-ffered, and my mother has suff-ered, and I dedicate this win to all who su-ffer, and then we can all go and have some calm times togetheir. And then I gath -er myself and go out to Wimbledon, and beat that Williams who dares to think she is the best. I am the best, because I have suff-ered, and my mother has su-ffered, and I will dedicate my Wimbledon victory to my mother and to all who have suff-ered. And then, I will suff-er,and I will have some moments of calm. And then I will beat that Williams again. Allez!

shite Says:

Maybe Henin will again overdose (as she did prior to 06 Aussie final, or so she claimed) and bail out of the final–wouldn’t that be sweet. I really want to throw up whenever I see her duckface–what a hideous person, both inside and outside. She’s such a disgrace to tennis.

Sean Randall Says:

I like Henin easily in that one. And a quick note on the men’s, I see Nadal maybe dropping a set at most to Fed in the final.

ross Says:

fed vs nadal again. looks like nadal will take it again. borg just couldn’t win the US open (4 finals, 1 semi), Lendl just couldn’t win wimbledon (2 finals and 5 semis), looks like fed just can’t win the french (2 finals, 1 semi already).

Well, anyway, these are the three best players of the open era.

John Says:

My picks are both upsets:

Roger and Ana.

claycourtrafa Says:

nadal fed fina;!!!! rafa yet to drop a set, and did he look ominous today, what is happening to feds first serve its never over 50% anymore

FloridaMan Says:

People are reading a little too much into Federer’s victory in Hamburg, some not even having watched the final. I saw that final, and for sure Nadal is playing FAR better now. Nadal now is making far less unforced errors and converting on the big points a lot more. Under those circumstances, on a clay court, there is no way Federer can beat Nadal. And I really do mean no way.

Giner Says:

Looks like you didn’t get your wish shite. Henin proves again why she is by far the best in the world on clay. Assuming she remains fit, she will win it again next year, and the year after that. She is the Nadal of the women’s tour.

Not sure if you realize it, but Momma’s girl lost her mother when she was young. Show a little respect for the dead at least.

grendel Says:

To Giner: yes, I realised it. Lots of us lost mothers when young. That’s how it goes. We don’t go on and on and on about it, in public, ad nauseam. Henin takes herself very, very seriously indeed. Forgive me if I don’t. She’s an absurd person. But undoubtedly a great tennis player. These two facts are not in contradiction, you know.

Giner Says:

So why call her Momma’s girl if she never had a ‘momma’?

It’s easy to tell someone to get over it. Have you lost someone young?

grendel Says:

Can’t you read? I said lots of us lost mothers when young, though I rather dislike having to repeat it. Your other remarks are unintelligible. Of course Henin had a Momma. Doesn’t she let us know all about it.

Steven Says:

Justine is an amazing tennis player, and a serious but very private person….SHE certainly does not go on and on about her mother. Thats absurd.
Mary Carillo and others go on and on about it. Re-telling the story at all of Justine’s big matches. Is that her fault? She talks mainly about her game, and more about Carlos than her mother. If you don’t remember anything else from this post remember this:
We don’t learn and grow by discovering the faults of others,
we learn and grow by discovering our own. I’m sure most of the posters here today, on self-reflection, can find plenty of internal work to do. Allez Justine!

samps Says:

Steven that comment was somewhat pedantic, sorry. Grendel, your comment was funny as it stands but I think the fact that she mentions mommy so much is not hard to see. If ur divorced from your husband and have been estranged from the rest of your family it can make for tricky emotional state. Coupled with her near-retirement from tennis due to her virus. Actually its perhaps less number of problems than most of the world but its not the best for a tennis player.
I dont think she builds the sympathy by intention. She was guilty of serious gamesmanship in Sydney and I have simply no clue what she was thinking there. I dont think she is a serial offender, for the lack of a better term though. And calling her “hideous both inside and outside” is Way OTT. I might easily be mistaken of course.
