The top half of the quarterfinals are set for Wednesday. In a rematch of what was to be the semifinals a year ago, Serena Williams will clash with Simona Halep.

Serena dusted qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2, 6-2 while Halep earned a retirement Barbora Strycova who retired down 6-3, 1-0 due to an upper respiratory illness.

“I feel sorry for her, being sick,” she said during her on-court interview. “I know how it is, and it’s tough to continue to play the match. It was a good start for me; I played a good first set, but the conditions are really difficult because I played two matches in the cold weather, and now it’s hot. I tried everything to keep things going in the right away, so I’m happy to be into the quarterfinals.

“I adjusted my game very well, just wanted to make fewer mistakes and keep the ball into the court. I moved better than I did in the beginning of the match, and I’m looking forward to the next one, where I hope to play better.”

Serena leads Halep 6-1 losing only at the WTA Finals round robin in 2014. Their last meeting was at Cincinnati last summer won by Serena 6-3, 7-6.

“I know that it’s gonna be tough to win, but still, I have my chance,” said Halep. “I believe that I have my chance, and I just have to go to play my best, to try everything to win.

“I think I have to do my game like I did every day since I came to the U.S.: aggressive, not very strong. I don’t hit very strong. I just take the ball fast. I move well. I hit with confidence. Also, the serve is going well.”

Serena is looking forward to the challenge.

“I really like her game,” said Williams. “I like how she’s aggressive. She’s a fighter. I definitely have to be ready.

“It’ll be a really good match I think for both of us to kind of see where we want to be at at this point in the year.”

Earlier in the day, Petra Kvitova fought off pesky qualifier Nicole Gibbs 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Radwanska eased past former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-3. But against Kvitova, Radwanska is just 3-6 though she won most recently last fall at the Singapore finals title match.

“I just remember it was very, very tough match. Long, tight, everything was tighter, every game, point by point,” Radwanska said. “[Here it’s] a little bit different surface, different conditions, definitely… But I think always against her you really have to play good tennis and be careful, particularly on her serve.

“I just hope I can really play my good tennis,” she said. “Because otherwise I will be in big trouble.”

In the evening, Karolina Pliskova knocked out Johanna Konta 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. The Czech will meet surprising 18-year-old Daria Kasatkina who stopped Timea Bascinszky in straights 6-4, 6-2.

Victoria Azarenka also won in 3 over Sam Stosur 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. On Thursday, she’ll meet Magdelena Rybarikova who received a retirement from Roberta Vinci while up 6-2, 2-0 on the Italian who injured her left ankle.

13 Comments for Serena Advances To Indian Wells QFs To Meet Halep Wednesday; Radwanksa v Kvitova

Van Persie Says:

Serena-Simona: I would be glad, if Simona would make a surprise, but my pick is Serena.

jalep Says:

Guten abend, Van Persie, agree with you. (must be evening there?)

Here’s my post from Tenngrand:

Only two WTA matches today; 😢 It’s the IW QF’s. Already looking forward to Miami.

Agnieszka Radwanska v Petra Kvitova:
Amazed that both Petra and Aga got this far. Aga’s movement less than her best, and Petra is up and down (she’s not been her great self since getting Mono last year). Aga trails in their h2h 3-6 – her biggest win over Petra was at the WTA Final last fall. Aga has had a better 2016 so far, but a busy month of tennis before coming into IW has me wondering if she’s over-played. Petra has been winning, but barely: should have lost first round to Danka Kovinic, almost lost second round to Johanna Larsson, and had a scare from Nicole Gibbs; all were three set matches. My pick is Aga Radwanska.

Serena Williams v Simona Halep
Both look ominous. But Serena’s ominous is just more ominous! Serena in 2.

The other two QF’s will be played tomorrow: Victoria Azarenka v Magdalena Rybarikova and Karolina Pliskova v Daria Kasatkina.

jalep Says:

That retirement from Roberta Vinci didn’t surprise me last night. Like Aga, I was wondering when Vinci would wear out. She and Aga both have been at the pointy end of tournaments working hard for over a month!

Kasatkina is amazing.

Van Persie Says:

Guten Morgen, Jalep ;) (it is morning for you)

Wanted also to mention the Aga-Petra match…I am an Aga fan, so I hope she will make it….haven’t seen Petra playing this tournament, so I cannot make a prediction.

Van Persie Says:

Jalep,

I have to leave now. Am glad for “seeing” you today.
Wish you an easy day at work ;)

jalep Says:

Yeah, VP. I don’t know how both are still in this: Aga and Petra. Really doubting either stand a chance v Serena in IW. The semi-final doesn’t look too compelling right now. But the Final might be good.

Vika is playing well, even if she appears slower. Rybarikova got lucky that Vinci was worn out. Pliskova – she should beat Kasatkina but that’s what I thought Bacsinszky would do.

All in all, hoping Vika makes the final!

Rafa over Sascha in 2 is my pick there. Happy Sascha got this far – did not expect it.

jalep Says:

Okay, VP. cheers. Nice seeing you, too.

So cute – this British commentator is biased toward Kvitova. Poor Petra is attempting to ask the umbrella girl for a “cold towel” but the girl can’t understand her.

It’s too hot out there, Kvitty. I agree. Aga serving for the first set and gets it, 6-2.

jalep Says:

Petra has decided to play or maybe is more used to the conditions? She has a bp …and gets it. 3-1, 2nd set, Petra.

And Milos has the 1st set, yay.

2 bp chances for Aga. And Petra drops serve – guess I spoke to soon. See if Aga can hold serve. Seems like this match is crawling a snail’s pace.

jalep Says:

Nope, Aga cannot hold serve.

Petra got the break back, does hold and is suddenly up 5-2. She’s got such a good serve when on. Pojd! Can she keep the momentum…

jalep Says:

Aga with a love hold. 5-3 Petra. Petra serving for 2nd set. My Gosh, it’s too laborious in the heat for Petra. She could use a sit down and the ice towel between points. Honestly. Aga breaks back. 5-4, Petra still leads but Aga’s about to try serving for 5-5. She does it.

jalep Says:

Petra makes it 6-5. Can Aga hold and get to a tb?

Seems like a good chance for Petra to break and steal the set…she’s sitting down with an ice towel. They both looked tired. But Aga a bit less. Such a wizard, Aga! 2nd set TB

jalep Says:

2-0 Aga. Genius to the mb. 3-0 Aga on a Petra error. Petra to serve. It’s a double mini break for Aga…4-0. One more serve Petra. 4-1, Petra has a point.

Aga serving. misses a drop shot badly. 4-2. 5-2 Aga. Petra serving. Polish net cord – 6-2! Poor Petra. She makes it 6-3, tho. Aga serving — game, set, and match. Aga to the Semi-final! Brava Aga.
