The 20-year-old Zverev collected his first title under new coach and former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.
“I feel like the longer the tournament gets, the better I start to play,” Zverev said.
Anderson was appearing in his first final since 2015 at Winston-Salem after earlier in the week saving a match point to beat Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals he upended Jack Sock.
“I think I can take a ton of positives from this week, and I’ve been able to do that for the past few tournaments,” said the 31-year-old Anderson. “That’s definitely a big encouragement for me.”
Zverev is tied with Rafael Nadal at four tournament wins on the year, and both trail Roger Federer’s five titles.
Zverev improved to 5-3 in career finals, while Anderson dropped to 3-9.
