Coco Gauff won her first title in the U.S. and she made it a big one, taking the 500 level title today in Washington, D.C. defeating Maria Sakkari

Gauff cruised early winning 15 of the first 20 points to build 3-0 lead. In the second, Sakkari scored the early break but gave it back later at 2-1. And the Greek’s serve and errors cost her down the stretch as Gauff rolled her to fourth career title, and she did it without dropping a set or facing a set point.

“I’m super happy with how I was able to manage today,” Gauff said after the win. “I played a pretty good match. I got broken a couple of times. I was able to break back.”

And she posted solid wins over defending champion Liudmila Samsonova, gold medalist Belinda Bencic and Top 10er Sakkari.

“I think the caliber of players I have beat this week was probably the strongest out of all of the tournaments I’ve played,” she said.

Gauff added famed coach Brad Gilbert to her team this week and it already paid off. The former ATP Top 5 will stay on with Gauff at the next two Masters events.

“It’s our first tournament as a full team,” Gauff told the crowd. “I’m glad that we were able to make this result. I know those who were with me at Wimbledon it was really tough a couple of weeks ago. We were all feeling it. I’m glad I was able to bounce back.”

Sakkari drops to 1-7 in career WTA finals.

“It was an incredible week,” a teary-eyed Sakkari said on court. “I’m not going to lie, it’s pretty disappointing. But at the same time, a month ago I didn’t think I would be here.”
