Clijsters, 7 Seeds Exit Saturday in MiamiPosted on March 26, 2006 Breezy conditions were blamed for a rash of upsets Saturday at the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami, with seven seeds making early exits in (2) Kim Clijsters (l. to American Jill Craybas), (9) Francesca Schiavone (l. to Russian Elena Vesnina), (19) Nathalie Dechy (l. to China's Jie Zheng), (25) Jelena Jankovic (l. to Belarus' Victoria Azarenka), (29) Lucie Safarova (l. to Dutchwoman Michaella Krajicek), (31) Shahar Peer (l. to Russian Anna Chakvetadze), and (33) Kveta Peschke (l. to Italian Maria Elena Camerin), all in straight sets.
Clijsters hadn't played in more than a month and it showed. "I'm a player who likes to play a lot of matches," Clijsters said. "That's something I'll have to build up again. The past few months, that has been a disadvantage. That's what I'm missing right now." Seeds safely into the third round were (4) Maria Sharapova (d. Li), (6) Elena Dementieva (d. Tatishvili), (10) Anastasia Myskina (d. Bychkova), (16) Anna-Lena Groenefeld (d. Asagoe in three), (20) Maria Kirilenko (d. King), (22) Tatiana Golovin (d. Dominguez Lino, bagel in the second), and (27) Klara Koukalova (d. Garbin in three). Marquee matches Sunday in Miami are (12) Svetlana Kuznetsova vs. (24) Martina Hingis, (6) Elena Dementieva vs. Michaella Krajicek, (1) Amelie Mauresmo vs. (30) Marion Bartoli in an all-French encounter, and (5) Nadia Petrova vs. American Jamea "Action" Jackson. |
