Mens Wimbledon Preview Round of 16
Posted on July 3, 2006* International Flavor -- There are 13 countries represented among the final 16 players with Spain leading the way with three players and the Czech Republic with two.
* Perfect Results -- Federer is the only player remaining yet to drop a set in his first three matches (9-0). He has only dropped his serve once thus far. The last player to win the title without dropping a set (21-0) was Bjorn Borg in 1976. Federer has won an Open Era record 44 consecutive matches on grass since his first round loss to Ancic at 2002 Wimbledon. During his 24-match winning streak at the All England Club Federer has won 72 of 76 sets.
* Looking Ahead -- Federer has a winning record against 14 of the 15 players remaining in the draw with the exception against Nadal, who holds a 6-1 career record against the World No. 1. Federer has a career mark of 50-18 against the remaining field with seven losses to Hewitt (leads 11-7) and six to Nadal. They are the only players in the bottom half of the draw to defeat Federer in his career.
* New Territory -- There are 10 players appearing in the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time in their career. Two others have matched their career-best finish. In fact, of the remaining players, only four -- Federer (2003-05 champion), Hewitt (2002 champion), Ancic (2004 SF) and Bjorkman (2003 QF) -- have reached the quarterfinals or better in the past.
* Grass Title Leaders -- Four of the remaining players have won at least two ATP grass court titles in their career led by Federer with seven, Hewitt (6), Ancic (2) and Bjorkman (2). They are the only players left with at least one title on grass.
* Oldest, Youngest Remaining -- Jonas Bjorkman (34) is the oldest player left while Novak Djokovic (19) is the youngest (by one week over Murray).
* Lowest-ranked Remaining -- Qualifier Irakli Labadze of the Republic of Georgia is the lowest-ranked player left at No. 166 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings.
