TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
Seven sessions have been washed out at the US Open this year...Top-half players like James Blake, Roger Federer and Marat Safin will have to play back-to-back days should they win Wednesday...Women's semifinals are scheduled for Friday with the men's for Saturday, weather permitting...The rain is expected to end Wednesday, however, there is a chance of showers returning on the weekend. A Monday prime-time final anyone?...Roger Federer got a hit in the rain on-site just before play was called off completely around 7:45pm...Jelena Jankovic had won just one of her first 10 matches on the year. Now she's a Slam semifinalist...Jiri Novak has played his last Grand Slam. The Czech vet will retire at the end of the year...The Haas-Safin winner will likely play the Murray-Davydenko winner Thursday afternoon with the other quarterfinal in the evening. No women's singles are scheduled for Thursday...Lleyton Hewitt is the last Top 10 player Andy Roddick has beaten. That win came at Cincinnati last year...Nikolay Davydenko is now dating Marcos Bagdhatis' ex-girlfriend Camille Neviere. If that doesn't motive you young boys to work harder at tennis what will? That should be a poster on the wall at the USTA training center in Carson...Andy Roddick on his on-court show of emotion: "I think that comes from confidence and I feel really confident right now."...From tennis blogger Charlie Bricker: ""Well, duh." That was Rodney Harmon, director of men's tennis, reducing the most important question about Ryan Sweeting to two words. The question: Does he turn pro or go back to the University of Florida after he gets home to Fort Lauderdale after serving as practice partner to the U.S. Davis Cup team in Russia, Sept. 22-24. There is a succession of knowledgeable tennis people who think it's time, including his personal coaches, Harold Solomon and Andy Brandi. "He's got all the tools -- physically and mentally," Solly said Tuesday morning by phone from Lauderdale. "He still needs to get physically stronger, but he's ready." Of course he's ready. Discount the five-game win over Guillermo Coria in the first round here, where Coria said "no mas" after pulling a hamstring and hitting five double faults in his first three service games (his shoulder wasn't exactly in the best of fitness, either). But taking a two sets to one lead over Olivier Rochus in the second round before going down with cramps 6-0 in the fifth says he can compete at a high level on the ATP tour. Ryan has either shut off his cell phone permanently or buried it in the bottom of his bag, because I can't get a return call from him. So I phoned Solly to see what he knows. Nothing. Same as when he left for New York. He hasn't made a decision, Harold said. My gut feeling is he's leaning toward going back to Gainesville."...From AP headline: "U.S. Open to Continue Without Agassi"...Pete Sampras heads the list of nominees for the 2007 International Tennis Hall of Fame induction, joined by Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, Sven Davidson (first Swedish man to win a Grand Slam), Christine Truman Janes (won the French Championships in 1959 at age 18), Russ Adams (photographer) and the late Robert Johnson (credited with launching the careers of Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson)...Andy Roddick, James Blake and the Bryan brothers were announced by U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe to face Russia in the semifinals...Headline from the Toronto Star: "Agassi a very good tennis player"...From The Washington Post on the Vince Spadea book: "As a bonus, single male readers may also benefit from Spadea's five-step program, culled from years of field-tested trials, for picking up women around the world. He calls it, "The Da Vince Code," and it details the do's and don'ts under subheadings that include "appearance," "conviction," "the approach" and "hooking up." On gum or candy: "Always keep a piece in your mouth...Chewing gum makes you happier and more confident. It can help you, if the girl rejects you, if you to continue to chew. It shows that you're still confident and have everything under control." Vin-sanity, probably needed a few extra sticks of gum after receiving that bagel from Roger Federer after his "camp" wouldn't stop talking-up the meeting with the top Swiss.
