Dulko, Molik Advance on Day Two at Indian WellsPosted on March 9, 2007 INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - Sixteen more players won first round matches at the $2.1 million Pacific Life Open Thursday, adding to the sixteen winners from Wednesday and completing the second round line-up. Although none of the 32 seeds were on court (they all received opening round byes), two of the world's Top 50 players were in action, with one advancing and one falling. Argentine Gisela Dulko, who has re-ascended to No.44 after some impressive results in Pattaya City and Acapulco, was a 64 63 winner against Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak. Dulko has made the quarterfinals twice here, in 2004 and a year ago; that comprises two of her three career Tier I quarterfinal runs, as she also made the last eight in Toronto two summers ago. French up-and-comer Aravane Rezai, currently ranked No.50, was not so lucky, losing to a resurgent Alicia Molik, 62 64. Molik, a former Top 10 player, has had a rapid climb back up the rankings so far this season after missing much of last season with an inner ear infection; she entered 2007 ranked No.165 and has risen all the way back up to No.66 as of this week, nearly a 100-spot climb. Another notable win was Vania King's 64 36 75 win over Kateryna Bondarenko. King almost allowed a third set lead to slip, but managed to close it out anyway. "Every match that I'm in is a learning experience," the American teenager said. "I tell myself to go out there and just try my best. I know I have to go out there and play my game." This is King's second try at Indian Wells and she has been impressive both times. In her 2006 debut, she knocked off the No.16 seed, Klara Zakopalova, before falling to Li Na in straight sets. Now, after an impressive opening round victory on Thursday, she'll have a looming second round against No.10 seed Ana Ivanovic. Other winners Thursday included Russian veteran Elena Likhovtseva and a trio of Americans, namely Bethanie Mattek, Ahsha Rolle and Laura Granville. The four highest doubles seeds, No.1 Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur, No.2 Yan Zi and Zheng Jie, No.3 Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suárez and No.4 Nathalie Dechy and Vera Zvonareva, all won their first round matches in straight sets. No.7 duo Janette Husarova and Meghann Shaughnessy weren't able to win, falling to Czech pairing Lucie Hradecka and Renata Voracova, 63 62. The top half of the singles draw plays the second round on Friday. The marquee names on the menu include top seed and defending champion Maria Sharapova, No.3 seed and former champ Martina Hingis, No.5 seed Jelena Jankovic and No.8 seed Anna Chakvetadze. (WTA) |
