Henin Putting Up Federer-Like Numbers with WTA Zurich Title

Posted on October 21, 2007

World No. 1 Justine Henin captured her tour-leading ninth singles title of the year Sunday, defeating unseeded Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin 6-4, 6-4 for the championship at the Zurich Open in Switzerland.

"Justine is such an inspiration to all of us, how professional she is doing everything from preparing for the match down to how she executes," said Golovin, with Henin drawing comparisons to the dominance of Roger Federer on the men's side.

No other player has won five titles this year on the WTA Tour compared to the Belgian's nine.

Henin has now won 20 matches in a row including titles at Toronto, the US Open, Stuttgart and now Zurich, the longest streak on the tour since 2005 when Kim Clijsters won 21 in a row.

Golovin drops to 2-5 in career singles finals.

"I need to recover now and take a few days off to be with my family and friends," Henin said. "I feel a little tired because I've always been getting to the semis and finals of tournaments this year, so the weeks are very long for me."

Henin beat Nicole Vaidisova in a three-set semifinal on Saturday.

"Even if I didn't play my best, I was more positive than yesterday," Henin said. "I definitely learned from our match in Stuttgart. I knew I'd have to hit more to her backhand, and come in and be as aggressive as possible. The turning point was at 4-2 in the first set, when I realized I was too far behind the baseline. I was giving her too much time and I had to take that away from her."
