Aussie Hero Dellacqua Dumps Mauresmo Out of Australian Open

Posted on January 18, 2008

Aussie Casey Dellacqua was the toast of Down Under Friday at the Australian Open after upsetting former No. 1 and current No. 18 seed Amelie Mauresmo 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

"Even if maybe the match went a different way, I would still tell you probably the same thing," said Mauremso, who contributed 10 double faults. "Great beginning of the match, but then struggle. Some ups and downs throughout the second and third sets."

Mauresmo is coming off a difficult 2007 campaign where she was sidelined with injuries and burnout.

One notable choke in the final stages of the match was the Frenchwoman double faulting at 4-5, deuce, in the third set before the Australian closed out the match on the next point.

"Confidence [was a problem] and really not keeping in mind the aggression that I should have, the fact that I should, as I was doing very well in the beginning, mix up some serve and volley, and staying back," Mauresmo said. "That works pretty well usually on my serve, but I forgot a little bit about that in the second and third set."

Next up for Dellaqua will be Serb No. 3 seed Jelena Jankovic, who appeared vulnerable in another three-set win over No. 30 seed Virginie Razzano of France.

Other seeded winners in the third round were (1) Justine Henin (d. (25) Francesca Schiavone), (5) Maria Sharapova (d. Elena Vesnina, bagel in the second), (7) Serena Williams (d. (26) Victoria Azarenka), (11) Elena Dementieva (d. (17) Shahar Peer, bagel in the second), and (12) Nicole Vaidisova (d. Ai Sugiyama).

"It was really exciting, I was glad to win in two sets," Henin said. "She's always given me a lot of trouble in the past and it was a tough third round for me so I'm glad to go through."
