Shoulder-addled Sharapova Withdraws from Rome, Madrid Posted on April 28, 2009
Maria Sharapova's shoulder injury will keep her from making a planned first singles appearance next week at the WTA event in Rome, and the Russian former No. 1 has also pulled out of the Madrid event the following week.
Sharapova is undergoing a slow recovery from shoulder surgery last year. She made a doubles-only appearance in March at the Indian Wells event, losing in the first round. It has been roughly eight months since Sharapova has played singles on tour, with her ranking dropping to No. 64 on the WTA Tour Rankings.
The Moscow News has reported that Sharapova may not be able to return from her injury, but there is no such news from the players or her representatives.
The Russian turned 22 on April 19, and noted on her website that she has not written an autobiography as she believes there are many chapters remaining in her tennis career.
"I have had many offers to do a book, I just don't think my story is finished yet," Sharapova writes. "I think at the right time I would be interested in doing a book."
As clay is the Russian's worst surface, she may end up skipping the claycourt season and the French Open all together, electing to make a strong debut on her favorite grasscourts in the events leading up to Wimbledon.
