by Tom Gainey

More bad news for the women’s circuit. Kim Clijsters has injured her ankle during a wedding party this weekend.

According to her website, the injury occurred while the Belgian tennis star was attending the wedding of her cousin, Tim.

A statement on her website read, “After a visit to the doctor, echo and NMR the diagnosis is a severe strain of both the medial and lateral ligaments of the right ankle and a torn ligaments, a torn capsule of the ankle joint, a hematoma and torn tendon sheath.”

Clijsters could be out as long as 4-6 weeks leaving the French Open in doubt.

“Kim’s ankle is now completely immobilised and she can not use her foot for a few days,” the statement said. “Kim faces a recovery of at least four to six weeks. Since the French Open starts in literally six weeks, Kim’s presence in Paris is very uncertain. In the meantime Kim has to continue working on her recovery of a shoulder and wrist injury.”

The star-starved WTA is already without the services of Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Justin Henin who announced her re-retirement.

arishuza Says:

i say she retires. it didn’t seem she had much motivation to play at indian well and miami, and now with this injury, i don’t see her fighting to get back to match play.

RZ Says:

This is a shame b/c she was definitely one of the favorites going into Roland Garros. If she has to miss this year’s French Open, hopefully she’ll stick around to play next year’s.

jane Says:

I’ll bet high heels combined with grass are to blame. Bummer. Hope Kim heals well and comes back soon!

dari Says:

Lol, Jane. Every female over the age if 17 knows what you mean!
In all seriousness, her website made a pretty grave and detailed announcement and threw in that she is also nursing other injuries- prognosis: bad.
I hope she recovers fully, I know she was talking about retiring soon and hope this doesn’t rush her there.

Kimberly Says:

uggh! Woz is winning this one.
