Resurgent Rafael Nadal Takes On Rival Andy Murray In Monte Carlo SFs Saturday

Enjoying his best week of what has been a tough season, Rafael Nadal seeks a third straight win over a Top 15 player Saturday when he meets rival Andy Murray for a spot in the Monte Carlo finals.

“He played a great match today,” said Nadal of Murray’s win over Milos Raonic. “We’ll see. I need to be ready to play the way I am playing the past two matches. If I am able to do it, I hope to have my chances.”

Nadal leads the Scot 16-6 splitting two meetings last year. But Murray stunned Rafa on his favorite surface in Spain in Madrid.

“I’ll go into the match with confidence having managed to win against him in Madrid on the clay last year, and having played a really good match today. I look forward to it,” said Murray who’s in his third Monte Carlo semifinal.

This will be their third meeting in Monte Carlo semifinals with Nadal winning in three sets in 2011 and in straights in 2009.

The two first played over nine years ago in a 5-set Australian Open fourth round won by Nadal. Nadal has won Monte Carlo a record eight times.

In the second semifinal, it’s an all-French affair between former semifinalists Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils. Neither player has been the finals of Monte Carlo, and Tsonga has never reached a clay final.

Tsonga has won four of six from his countryman. Monfils won their most recent meeting last year in Miami. This is their first clash on clay.

“It’s going to be a big match for several reasons,” said Monfils. “First, Jo has a game that I have trouble with. I was able to beat him once, but he was coming back from an injury.

“He gives me many problems. It’s always the case when I play against very aggressive players. I will need to find a solution to push him back and to try to stop him dominating the rallies. I think it’s going to be explosive.”

151 Comments for Resurgent Rafael Nadal Takes On Rival Andy Murray In Monte Carlo SFs Saturday

anki Says:

Murray is going to get destroyed by Rafa, who seems to have got his mojo back.

Daniel Says:

Wow, Murray unleashing FH’s today.

Daniel Says:

Murray playing great so far, high first serve percentage, winning all points with first serve and his shots are deep. Had a BP in Nadal last game where he missed an easy FH, but other than that he is pretty solid.

Let’s see how Nadal next service game.

Daniel Says:

Perfect drop shot that Nadal didn’t even move.

Daniel Says:

Well, Murray had his chances, 0-30 and he missed a silly BH and now let Nadal win 4 straight points, 2-2

Daniel Says:

Murray is winning far more of the long points.

Daniel Says:

And Murray gets first break, let’s see if he continues holding with ease.

Daniel Says:

Wow, 2 BH winners in a row, one wrong footing cross court and now one down the line.

Daniel Says:

After 30-0, BP Nadal, Murray better serve good

Daniel Says:

And so he did, ace!

Daniel Says:

Wow, Murray’s BH son fire, he is unleashing some crosscourt flat winners. One of his best sets so far, this year. 5-2

Pauly Says:

Wow
Murray thrashing Nadal on clay
Was hoping for Nadal win
But I guess Murray is too good on clay
Remember that thrashing in Madrid last year
Another one is coming

Pauly Says:

Wow
Murray thrashing Nadal on clay
Was hoping for Nadal win
But I guess Murray is too good on clay
Remember that thrashing in Madrid last year
Another one is coming

Daniel Says:

Murray master of drop shots, amazing.

Daniel Says:

And Andy takes first set 6-2 breaking, will serve first second set.

Let’s see if he holds form but seems like Novak is not the only problem for Nadal on clay going forward anymore, as Andy’s game plan is working perfectly.

Hope Andy wins this title, no better way to start clay seasoned build on it.

Pauly Says:

Unbelievable Murray playing with Nadal
Nadal isn’t back
Amazing thrashing coming
Same as
Madrid
Djokovic out Nadal still can’t Win nothing

Pauly Says:

Where is the old Nadal ?

Okiegal Says:

Yeah, Rafa getting outplayed today….I wish Rafa could get as few free points on serve…..that would so nice…..but his serve is lacking in that department.

Vamos Rafa! 🐂🐂🐂🐂

Colin Says:

I hope Anki backed up that forecast by betting heavily on Rafa (who may, of course, still win).

Daniel Says:

Murray drops and Nadal breaks first game with his first BH winner.

Pauly Says:

Murray can win French open

Pauly Says:

Murray will break back you watch

Daniel Says:

0-30

Daniel Says:

What a point by Nadal now, 30-30.

Daniel Says:

Another BP for Murray.

Daniel Says:

OH Murray, chose wrong, wither lobby or DTL, he went for Nadal and lost.

Daniel Says:

Murray is forcing Nadal’s BH until it breaks. Another BP

Daniel Says:

And he breaks back, that will be a cold bucket on Nadal.

Daniel Says:

Last 3 times he served Murray broke.

Daniel Says:

Murray’s drop shots are amazing, so close to the net and bouncing low, he won almost ballpoints with it.

Pauly Says:

I was right
Murray broke back
Wow
If he can’t beat Murray how can he ever win anything major ?
On clay
Wow not good

Daniel Says:

Easy hold, 2-1. Now pressure on Nadal.

Pauly Says:

Nadal won’t win any masters nor slams this year
Not playing like this
Murray has mastered him on clay
Nadal won’t beat Wawrinka in Paris either
Don’t expect anything from Nadal no more
Just pray for him

Pauly Says:

Murray will Monte Carlo
Hope he gets the French

Pauly Says:

With Djokovic out
With Murray out
With Wawrinka out
Nadal would still lose to someone

Okiegal Says:

Rafa breaks again, but can he back it up???

Okiegal Says:

I don’t think so……

Okiegal Says:

C’mon Rafa

Daniel Says:

Nadal breaks but again on trouble serve, 15-30. Murray better break back and not allow Nadal to feel comfortable.

Daniel Says:

Nadal missing an inside out normal FH for his standards, setting DP for Murray.

Daniel Says:

Nadal’s BH pretty solid this last point, Murray should try some DTL for a change. 2 BP’s gone.

Okiegal Says:

He makes me so nervous I am about to have an accident!🚽🚽🚽🚽🚽 lol

Okiegal Says:

Nice shot Andy!

Okiegal Says:

Whew!!!!

Daniel Says:

And he holds, 5-3. Murray needs to holds own and force Nadal to serve for the set, and still have another chance to break, but he got hold. Worst case he start serving first third set, which can be crucial if the set is long.

Daniel Says:

What a gun shot BH!!!

Daniel Says:

Murray should have come to the net way sooner to finish the point, lucky shot from Nadal and no is deuce

jalep Says:

Helluva great match!

Can’t believe how well Andy is playing! Haven’t seen this level from Andy since Davis Cup.

Rafa has the old Rafa determination. Grit. Never say die.

Daniel Says:

Nadal closes second set, he was hitting more powerful shots, his FH averaged 9 mph more than first set.

Open match now. Key also was that Nadal started winning longer points more than in first set.

Pauly Says:

The praying for Nadal helped him

jalep Says:

Andy has to be credited. He’s taking a rejuvenated Rafa to the limit in a Monte Carlo semi-final. Woot! Andy Murray.

And dare I say it, vamos Wafa…….😨😨

Let’s go Andy – gosh would be a phenomenal win for Andy.

Daniel Says:

Murray’s serve percentage drop to 39% in set 2, he needs to improve that otherwise he won’t win.

Daniel Says:

0-40, momentum with Nadal

Daniel Says:

What a volley, 1 BP saved

jalep Says:

Rafa’s speed is fine. Vintage speed and footwork. Moxie, mojo …it’s all there, da sh!t.

Okiegal Says:

Look, Jalep and Markus….someone created me my own emoticon…..🆗…..abbreviated, of course!! Love it!!

Daniel Says:

3 saved, hope he can hold serve now, this could be the turning point for him.

Daniel Says:

Nadal’s shot is so deep today,if he keeps improving on clay by the time RG comes he could be ready again

Daniel Says:

2 drops by Nadal to break, Murray tactics to go only after Nadal BH cross court and BH to FH is not working anymore, is like he got predictable and Nadal is placing his shots better. Murray need to go DTL more often to get him second guessing more.

nits Says:

No praying helps Pauly you have to grit it out

jalep Says:

Genius drop shot, Rafa.
C’mon Andy! Do not give up court position, damm it. Oh Andy.

Rafa breaks. That could be it.

Daniel Says:

Everyhting is working for Nadal now, even a spank return from Murray Nadal just put his racquet and the ball land 2 inches from baseline deep

Daniel Says:

Now Murray has to hold, worst thing happen and he got break to open set.

Daniel Says:

2 first serves for Andy but knifer points, Nadal got the groove on returns.

jalep Says:

🌶 pretend it’s green, Okiegal. That’s my avatar 🌶

🆗👩, 😘

nits Says:

murray holds

Daniel Says:

Finally some free points and he holds. Now put the returns aggressive and not miss easy balls, the sooner he breaks back the better.

jalep Says:

Not sure Nole ole could hold his position vs this Rafa. Transformation will be complete if he wins this MC. That’s what I believe.

Hope Dominic Thiem and Gunter Bresnik are watching. Boris Becker, too. Yikes!

nits Says:

Getting very difficult for Murray Nadal in full flow now

Daniel Says:

Murray collapsing now, lost 7 straight points, match over.He should have taken his chances in second set the game he had double BP, now Nadal is super confident and will win easy.

nits Says:

nadal breaks again now 4-1

Daniel Says:

How match can shift, lookalike it would be a clean 2 sets victory formerly who were outplaying Nadal but suddenly his serve percentage dropped and Nadal got better.

And there is nothing positive about winning just a set over Nadal on clay, you have to go on and beat him and Murray was in tis situation with Nadal several times before, he just can’t sustain it.

Wog Boy Says:

I am not watching, but looks like Andy is shutting the shop for tonight, he had enough.

Okiegal Says:

@Jalep….whatever you say, I will roll with it!! Lol

Pauly Says:

Murray has left the building
Wow

jalep Says:

I’m not da Boss! 🆗👩

You are free to tell 🌶 to stuff it or pop it, lol…

Pauly Says:

Murray was thrashing Nadal early
Wow did Nadal’s form improve or andy went to sleep

Pauly Says:

Nadal struggling to close it out
He makes all his fans so nervous

jalep Says:

Andy knows Rafa the vintage Rafa very well – the King of Clay. He knows how to beat him but it was too much Rafa – Andy couldn’t execute, hold position, or keep up. Maybe on a different surface? In Madrid at a little altitude? Where it’s not quite Rafa’s best venue… ?

Back to same ol, same old. Or, if you are a Rafa fan – order has been restored.

Okiegal Says:

Well this match ended way better than it started! 👏👏👏👏👏

Pauly Says:

Nadal struggling to close it out
He makes all his fans so nervous
Finally
Vamos

jalep Says:

Yep – Rafa struggling to close – hm, that’s a new one. Maybe saw it vs ? I forget, this MC. But Rafa gets it!

And he had 2 breaks so…
Woulda got it anyway.

Daniel Says:

His best result since RG 2014, getting back to Monte Carlo final beating world #2.

Looks like King of Clay is back!

Pauly Says:

No one can beat prime Nadal on clay only Djokovic of 2011 but even in that year he couldn’t even make the final of French
Nadal isn’t as fast nor does he hit the forehand as well but he’s still good

J-Kath Says:

Congrats to All Rafa fans…..you deserve to be thrilled….looks like Rafa is back. And is very likely to beat a Frenchman tomorrow.

Giles Says:

Well done Champ!
Vamos!

Pauly Says:

As I said building confidence in his game is the only way forward for the most injury prone player I’ve ever seen
Vamos Rafa 👏👏👏
One more French open please that’s all I want
Perfect 10

Margot Says:

Well played Rafa. Congrats to him and his fans. Insane get….running away from the net to a high bouncing ball on the baseline and hitting, from that position, a forehand winner. I think, if I’d been Andy, I’d have burst into tears and left the court at that point.
Jeez! tho. Andy FSP in 2nd and 3rd lost him the match IMHO. 29% WTF? Andy fans know not gonna win with that. How can his serve go from hero to zero in the space of an hour?
Just baffled. But, being very Pollyanna here, his forehand looked rock solid….. for once LOL.

montecarlo Says:

It’s so funny to read Pauly’s comments in this thread. That’s what is called making a fool of himself. :P

jalep Says:

No, Pauly, No…Not the FO, again! Nine is enough!

Take Wimbledon, USO, AO…something different 🙃

Giles Says:

Wish Andy would put in as much effort against joker!!!

Okiegal Says:

@Jalep….I found an emoji that favors Avatar…..see what you think 👽👽👽👽 ??? It is an Alien, I wonder if it’s illegal???? Lol

Pauly Says:

Monte Carlo

Call me a fool it’s ok
Call my comments it’s ok
I’m not upset
I just want Nadal to play well like before
That’s its end of story

Pauly Says:

Jalep

Remember Bo Derek movie ?
Perfect 10
Well they might make a movie about Nadal & Roland Garros
Wonder what they’ll call that movie ?
Perfect 10 😂😂😂

Pauly Says:

Wow
Murray Nadal always good friends
But apparently there was sniping & bitching
Lol 😂😂😂
Just read the guardian sport site

Margot Says:

BTW folks the emoticons are lovely, I’m plainly jealous, but…one of each will make the point just as well as 301. And the same goes for these !!!!!! and these ?????????????????

jalep Says:

lol, I was wondering who would say something first, Margot.

CyclingNews has a limit of 5 emoticons per post – and that’s a generous amount, imo.

I’ll tone it down. 😉

Okiegal Says:

Sorry Margot…..I got a l carried away with the toilets the bulls and the clapping hands. The way the match started I just knew Andy was gonna win it. Had he beat Rafa I would have been ok with that too….I love Andy and he was playing so great in the beginning, but Rafa wouldn’t go away today. Sorry for you as a devoted fan…..I will cool it with overuse of the emoticons……

Okiegal Says:

Okiegal’s done it again…..started something annoying. Lol

Vami Says:

Nadal played at his top (and with lady luck giving him a lot of lines) but he didn’t win the match, Andy lost it. Andy’s first serves totally abandoned him, Novak or Roger would butcher him out there with crappy serving like that but Nadal being one dimensional as he is always plays the same, no matter what. That’s his “mental” problem.
I feel sorry for Andy, after gifting Nadal first two serving games in the 2nd he was out of the match. Now I can see how Andy’s supporters feel when he plays Novak.

Giles Says:

Geez! So many green eyed monsters! Laughable really!
Well done Rafa!
Vamos Champ!

jalep Says:

Interesting to read the Rafa/Andy match play by play description from the Guardian.

What I miss with Tennis Channel is seeing more of what goes on during changeover’s. Tennis Channel shows so many commercials – I barely get to see it.

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/live/2016/apr/16/andy-murray-v-rafael-nadal-monte-carlo-masters-semi-final-live

Meanwhile, Tsonga woke up it appears. Monfils took the 1st set 6-1.

Daniel Says:

Who has a shot of giving Nadal a better fight, Tsonga or Monfils? Think Tossing due to his serve and more aggressive. Monfils is not reliable.

Nadal safe for Masters 28th tieing Nole, plot thickens

Daniel Says:

Neither playing great but Tsonga playing worse.

Green Lady Says:

Vami im afraid Nole and Roger got eliminated, so are not factors in this tournament anymore, ifs, buts, woulds, coulds, shoulds mean doodle squat, in the real world, its all irrelevant ….

senorita Says:

Vami, Nadal is not 17:6 against Murray for nothing. :)

jalep Says:

Oops. LaMonf breaks and now serving for the match.

Allez Gael! He’s into the Monte Carlo Final.

And congrats to Rafa and all his fans!

Can’t see Monfils making it very competitive but well done to him making the final!

Daniel Says:

This is also a tendency with Murra ref serve, he wears himself in rallies and when the match goes on his serve become more and more attackable, also Nadal tends to return better and better as the match move on. But below 505 in both sets was awful, he should removed the pace and focus on positioning and increase rate.

Meanwhile, Monfils reaching the final without losing a set so far, but he really didn’t get much competition. Real test is if he can put a fight against Nadal or if he will be just happy to be in finals.

Margot Says:

Cheers OK and Jalep….was getting a terrible eye ache :) But don’t stop altogether, they are sweet.
Well…that match certainly shut the crowd up. Jo! Jo! From hero to zero in a day. What would you do with him? Can’t see Gael beating Rafa but hope it’s a good match.

Green Lady Says:

Sorry for Andy and fans Margot, J-Kath etc, and as much as i love Andy, Rafa is still my favorite, VAMOS RAFA ….

jalep Says:

Did not see the start of the Rafa v Andy match. I guess even the coin toss was interesting.

http://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/36062630

Quite understand about the emoticons, Margot. No problem.
My Emoji Story to 🆗👩 was over the top last night – you maybe read it? I was channeling the great RF. Markus brilliantly translated.

Margot Says:

@Jalep
The story was fun and, as far as I remember, only one of each……;)

James Says:

Murray proved once again that he is Nadal’s pigeon. Even against a sub-par Nadal, he can’t win.

tomorrow should be interesting – I think Monfils get a win.

Green Lady Says:

Ive been working so didnt see any of the match, have it on recored, so will watch it later, finish at 3 tomorrow, and the match starts at 1.30, so hopefully ill catch some of it ….

jalep Says:

Posting this for the poster Matt (Matt in blue lettering)
It’s Rafa’s take on conquering anxiety and getting his confidence back:

http://www.efe.com/efe/english/sports/nadal-overcomes-anxiety-by-daily-effort/50000266-2890117

jane Says:

missed the matches, arrgh. but carole bouchard tweeted that andy had been working relentlessly on his serves in the practices she watched, and that bbc report makes it sound like the work was paying off in the first set.

but wow, lots of strange umping by the sounds of it. andy mad because of rafa getting extra time, the coin toss going his way but ump giving the call to rafa? did anyone see nadal’s team coaching from the sidelines? it all sounds very intense with lots of drama. hope to catch a replay.

congrats to rafa fans. commies to andy’s fans.

on another note, am super happy for gael!! i know his chances are slim to none for the final but it would be pretty awesome to see him win it wouldn’t it? has he ever even won a masters? with his talent he surely should have. but given he’s 2-11 vs rafa, well… they haven’t played on clay since 2011 but rafa won then quite easily.

jalep Says:

Went to find a match report in Spanish but both Spanish and English versions from Marca.com sports were brief and to the point:

http://www.marca.com/en/more-sports/2016/04/16/5712597122601dda2c8b45fc.html

♎🌶 searching for both sides of a story.

elina Says:

So happy for Gael today!!!!

Hope my fav wins again tomorrow!!!

jalep Says:

hahaha elina, yay Gael!

jane Says:

jalep here’s what rafa said

Carole Bouchard ‏@carole_bouchard 1h1 hour ago
Asking Rafa about what went on between Andy and umpire : “I don’t know nothing, sorry”. Pause : “I don’t know anything, sorry”. :p

and here’s andy’s quote

Carole Bouchard ‏@carole_bouchard 1h1 hour ago
“Draw your own conclusions”, says Murray when asked about time taken by Nadal between points and umpire decisions. Won’t dwell on it

both are following the old adage “mum’s the word.” :)

Vami Says:

Raphael the ped mutant ninja turtle and his dirty tricks. He lost two break point opportunities and suddenly had something in his eye? Even called a trainer just in case if further disruption was needed, but when the poor guy showed he told him to piss off, “everything was fine” as the tide was again on his side. Uncle Tony managed to find a new dirty trick, the guy is so creative.

GO GAEL!

jalep Says:

Thanks jane. I know the English speaking media embellishes. But my search engine doesn’t bring up much as it is for an alternate take. I’ll go to the clinic at cyclingnews, find the tennis thread and see what, if anything I can find. Maybe even ask around, but there’s a lot of Anti-Rafa’s there.

Coin toss was weird.

Here’s for Rafa Fans’s:
https://vine.co/v/itIapJ1t65j

crazy fast court coverage today. Faster than the ball in most cases 😄

Giles Says:

12 49 pm
Wallow in your hatred.
Vamos Rafa!

Tennis Vagabond Says:

Green Lady, OkieGal: VAMOS!!!

I missed today’s action, but Rafa looked great in his shot making against Stan, and it sounds like his defense today was also terrific.

Van Persie Says:

Felt sorry for Andy today….he played an amazing first set, his level dropped afterwards, lost the focus…

Go Gael!

Green Lady Says:

Tennis Vagabond thankyou so much, didnt actually, i didnt actually see the match, but i will watch the replay when i get chance, i hope he wins the final, but Gaels such a nice guy, that i would be happy for him and Elina ;-)), and such a talented player too, CHEERS AGAIN ….

Okiegal Says:

@TV….Thanks….got to watch it…thanks to my new very LOUD WIND-UP ALARM CLOCK!! It ticks so loud I can’t get to sleep very fast. So I put it in my bathroom off of my bedroom and closed the door….that worked fine. It went off at 5:30 and I flew out of the bed like I’d been shot out of a cannon! Solved that problem. So happy for Rafa’s win….I really thought he was out of it…..Andy ate him up that first set…..Rafa upped his level and Andy couldn’t maintain what he had going on in the first set. Great shot making from both and Andy made it difficult for Rafa to serve it out. It was a good entertaining match, from the standpoint of a Rafa fan….not sure about Andy’s fan base. I know they’re disappointed coz he started out with guns a blazing!! Sorry to his fans….Now if he can beat Gael I will be a happy camper! Cheers TV!!

Okiegal Says:

@Vami

Your ninja 🐢 theory = 🐂💩…..😷….stinky remark! Lol

🆗

Giles Says:

Okie. And the prize goes to you for post of the day at 2 36 pm.
👍👏🏿🤑😇

Tennis Vagabond Says:

This may be a first on X. I agree with Giles (on Post of the Day).

Congrats Rafa and his loyal fans on X!

Okiegal Says:

Giles……I knew you would love it! Thanks for not disappointing Okie….I will have to admit….it was rather clever of me…..🆗….😁

Okiegal Says:

@TV….I will gladly accept the prize for post of the day! U will have to admit, Giles knows his stuff when it comes to Rafa….and that no 🐂…..😯

J-Kath Says:

Jane @12.41

They all tend to leave their frustrations on the court – which is a good thing, I think, as there are some good friendships that exist despite the strain of competitiveness on court.

Pauly Says:

So much hatred for Nadal
Has anyone ever had something in their eye ?
It’s very irritating so Nadal did nothing wrong
Murray was playing better early on but Nadal improved so just accept it haters Nadal was the better player as the match went on … He outlasted Murray the mental midget

J-Kath Says:

Jalep

The coin toss…yes, Andy had tails and should have been offered the option of going first or second whereas Rafa was asked if he wanted to go first or second. Rafa said I didn’t win the toss. Andy wasn’t much bothered he said let’s do it again. Andy got tails again and won the toss. In retrospect it kind of set the tone of that match.

J-Kath Says:

Okiegal

Andy’s fan base should not have been watching. He only wins when we don’t watch or follow – one way or another.

Wog Boy Says:

“Nadal was regularly taking more than the permitted 25 seconds but was warned only once by the umpire, Damien Dumusois, on match point in the final game.”

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/andy-murray-vs-rafael-nadal-match-report-nadal-rediscovers-his-old-self-to-hint-at-return-to-clay-a6987296.html

If Rafa was doing that to Federer, this site would be crying it’s lungs out, but because there is only few Andy’s fans here and Andy is not Roger it’s ok to waste the time and destruct oponent, and even insult the posters who are bringing the fact that the player and his team are breaking the rules on purpose for their advantage and chair umpire did nothing about that, basically encouraged him to keep doing it.
Gael doesn’t stand a chance, he is yet to win a set against Rafa on clay, but hope dies last, GO GAEL.

Wog Boy Says:

Pauly,
Whay is hatred to point out that the dude breaks the rules and that is a part of his game plan and tactics and gets away with that, for years, he is protected like rare species?
Why is hatred to point out that his coach and uncle is doing illegal coaching on regular basis also as a part of his nephew’s game and team tactics and gets away with that too?
Don’t you understand the word “rules” and “breaking the rules” and the role of chair umpire in all of that?

Travis Bickle Says:

I don’t have a problem with Nadal’s time between points. If umpire allows it, it is fine. In tennis tradition, it has always been up to umpire’s discretion.

Once they replace umpire’s discretion with the time clock, Nadal will have to adjust, or quit playing. As things stand now, Rafa is not doing anything wrong since umpires allow him to go over 30 seconds between points, or to clean dust from his eyes, or whatever else happens… definitely not Rafa’s fault.

I have a feeling though, that Rafa would not be able to adjust to play quicker if required by a time clock. He’d have to cut down on his mental disorder rituals in between points and that is likely impossible for him at this stage of his career and his mental disorder.

Wog Boy Says:

TB,

You lost me, if you have written rules then umpire is there to implement them and in force them not to give advantage to some players and disadvantage to others by implementing the rules selectively. If Rafa was given a warning in the first set he woul have in his mind that next warning brings second serve and next one point penalty and wouldn’t be so blatant in breaking the rules, but instead umpire gives him a warning after 2 hours and 42 minutes, that’s laughable.

Travis Bickle Says:

WB,

In tennis there are no written rules for certain things, only recommendations.

For instance, in basketball you have a shot clock rule, and when it’s violated, the siren sounds and the ball is lost. Note that a referee does not have any say in that – hence the rule.

In tennis, the 25 seconds in only a recommendation and the umpire has the final say – his/hers discretion is the rule in that case.
Once they introduce the time clock between the point and remove umpire’s discretion (like hawk eye for example), you will be able to say there are written rules – for now no such thing, and players that umpires are afraid (i.e. Nadal) will be the main beneficiaries. Did Nadal not ban that Brazilian umpire from his matches? Bullshit like that cannot happen in other sports – Imagine Steph Curry requesting from NBA that certain ref cannot be at his matches…

Wog Boy Says:

TB,

Thanks, I didn’t know that, I thought it is written rule that has to implemented equality regardless of the name of player, whether it is Nadal or Dzumhur.

Travis Bickle Says:

Nope, unfortunately the name of a player is what matter!

Today, graphic showed that average times between points are Murray 27 sec, Nadal 31 sec. Guess who was the first one to get warning?

Okiegal Says:

It is the role of the umpire to clock Rafa when he is over the time limit….TB is right the official wasn’t doing his job and therein lies the problem. It’s not Rafa’s fault he isn’t doing his job. Coaching from the stands is common place from other coaches, not just Tony. I understand the official thought Andy hit a ball at his perch…didn’t see that, so I don’t know. Andy was frustrated by a lot of things and I believe he lost focus. That is part of Andy’s game that Lendl kept in check, imo. I think Andy and Rafa used to be sort of friendly….but not today. It is very possible Rafa got something in his eye…..Andy has had his issues on court with various niggles….all of the players have….except for Roger. Surely Andy isn’t blaming Rafa for the loss because of him taking too much time. There were some very long rallies and I would think 30 secs between those points would be welcome……I think I read that Rafa had won 7 of the last 8 clay matches against Andy….or could have been 6 of 7….not sure…so that really tells the tale.

Wogboy, when they showed average time between points, AVERAGE time now, both Nadal and Andy were over 25 seconds, Nadal at 31 and Murray at 27 which means that BOTH players regularly (roughly more than half their points) exceeded the time limit.

Difference was only one player complained about it.

The rule is not just for Nadal (even though that is why it was changed after Roger complained).

As far as Toni coaching from the stands, again, common practise. Even Boris has admitted to having ways of communicating with Nole during the match.

“I think there is a bond, a relationship, an understanding of the player and coach. Obviously I’ve got my job and it’s a very intimate relationship because it’s one on one. There are moments when he looks up and he needs assurance that what he is doing is right,” Becker said via The Mirror. “And then we have our ways about it to tell him it’s good or tell him it’s bad. And then it’s up to him to change it.”

Pauly, reason for the hatred from Vami et al is very simple.

Head. To. Head. Nothing new.

Tennisfan Says:

Yeah the blame mostly lies with the umpire for not enforcing the rules but let’s not take this in a vacuum. Its not as if Rafa hasn’t consistently broken the time-limit rule over the last decade and also questioned why it should even exist. People aren’t wrong if they criticise him for not abiding by the rules. If it was a situation like Djokovic’s where he actually took steps to stay within the time limit (i.e. he doesn’t incessantly bounce the ball before serving anymore) then no-one would even be complaining about it.

Okiegal Says:

Rafa has played his whole career slow and methodical. Not sure when the crackdown came down….2013 maybe?? This has not been an easy adjustment for Rafa….and his game has suffered some because of it. Rushing is very detrimental for him. Some think he blatantly does it on purpose. I honestly don’t think he can help it…He gets wrapped up in his game with focus and concentration and the time gets away from him. But it is the rule and he needs to practice with a stopwatch or something to get a handle on it. I think he is doing much better but still room for improvement. The stat showed 27 and 31 secs between serves….Rafa at 31. Andy complained about it and he was within the time limit either. Clearly the umpire’s fault for letting him get by with it…..also Andy.

Okiegal Says:

^^^^^¥Should say….wasn’t within the time limit either…….

Green Lady Says:

The time violation, isnt exclusive to Nadal, neither is the coaching, never the less, two wrongs certainly dont make a right, and the rules should be enforced by the umpires, and followed by all the players, with no preferential treatment either ….
