Regions Morgan Keegan Championships & The Cellular South Cup
Memphis, Tenn., USA
Surface: indoor hard (Plexipave)
Men — $1,100,000
Women — $220,000

Men’s Seeds: Andy Roddick, Fernando “Hot Sauce” Verdasco, Radek “The Worm” Stepanek, Tommy Haas, Tomas “Birdshit” Berdych, John Isner, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Sam Querrey
ADHEREL
Floaters: James Blake, Robby Ginepri, Mardy Fish, “The Importance of Being” Ernests Gulbis, “Dr.” Ivo Karlovic, Xavier “X-Man” Malisse, Taylor Dent, Jeremy Chardy

Notes: (1) Roddick opens against slumping Blake, with winner to possibly face Ginepri; another other opener of interest is (4) Haas vs. X-Man in a battle of Bradenton; a number of possibly interesting second-round match-ups; last year Roddick beat The Worm in the final; Roddick is 28-7 career in Memphis, Haas 28-8; former champs in the field are Roddick (2009,’02), Haas (2007-06,’99), and Dent (2003).

Women’s Seeds: Maria Sharapova, Melanie Oudin, Kaia Kanepi, Lucie Hradecka, Petra Kvitova, Kristina Barrois, Vania King, Elena Baltacha

Floaters: (WC) Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Arantxa Rus, (WC) Nicole Vaidisova, Michelle “The Screamer” Larcher de Brito, Karolina “The Spreminator” Sprem

Notes: Quality falls off the table after Sharapova and Oudin — Barrois seeded? Ouch; (1) Sharapova opens against resurgent American Shenay Perry (who had to sit out Fed Cup last weekend with injury) and could face another American in the second round in Mattek-Sands; (3) Kanepi opens against the former world No. 1 junior Rus, and (4) Hradecka against The Spreminator; Oudin, flying in from a strong week at Paris, opens against a qualifier; Vaidisova hasn’t won a tour-level main draw match since Barcelona last April; Sharapova hoping to learn how to win again at the tiny $220K event; in last year’s final Victoria Azarenka beat Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets, now both players are too big for Memphis; no past champs in the field for the event that has included winners such as Lindsay Davenport (2 times), Venus Williams (3), and Monica Seles (2).

Skorocel Says:

Battle of Bradenton? LOL :-)

Joel Says:

The discrepancy between the gender rewards is kinda lame. Five times the difference?

jane Says:

Hope Roddick wins this title and Soderling wins in Rotterdam now that Djoko is out. Sigh. Good luck to them!

sar Says:

Nole did not give his best. Youzhny never wins anything so I am hoping for him.

Kimmi Says:

Hot sauce in the fnal san jose..can he win his 2nd hardcourt title?

Kimmi Says:

“If I was going to be honest with myself I did not expect to get to the final,” Verdasco said. “After the Australian Open I took 10 days off to rest and only practiced three days in Los Angeles before coming up here.”

So I guess he is not expecting to win tomorrow? Strange.

jane Says:

sar – Kubot will play in the Brasil final versus Ferrero! That could be a fun match to watch.

Ben Pronin Says:

Hahaha Tomas “Birdshit” Berdych! That’s great. I used to love Berdych but boy has he disappointed. At least Gasquet, Monfils, and Baghdatis have reach at least a slam semi, what’s Berdych done? So much wasted talented, it kills me!

jane Says:

What’s going on with Roddick? I’ve been watching women’s Olympic hockey – our team beat the Slovakians 18-0! I felt sorry for the opposition actually. Hate seeing such extreme routs, even when it’s my team – anyhow I just checked the match scores only to see that Andy’s down 1 or 2 breaks. I’ll have to find a stream and see what’s up. Hmmm…

Skorocel Says:

jane: 18-0? LOL :-) If that’s what our men’s team awaits, then good luck guys! At least Kuzmina won gold for us today in biathlon…

jane Says:

Yes, you can’t complain with that one gold anyhow Skorocal, but it was quite the beat down. Bodes well for our girls though. ; )

Looks like Roddick is back on track in the second set.

jane Says:

oops typo – Skorocel…not cal.

Kimmi Says:

Sam Querrey forehand is dangerous

jane Says:

True Kimmi, and his serve isn’t too shabby either! But he doesn’t seem to win consistently enough. Looks like a tiebreak for the second set. If Roddick can win it, it will probably be enough to swing the momentum in his favor. Let’s see.

Kimmi Says:

Strange..Querrey is not showing any emotions here, no fist pump..nothing, he is very subdued..is it respect for roddick ?

jane Says:

I think Querrey is always like that; I remember when he and Cilic played that 5 setter at Wimbledon – the two of them are pretty subdued.

Well, Roddick has leveled it. You have to like him to come through now. I think a Roddick vs. Verdasco final will be better. Although watching Querrey’s forehand vs. Hotsauce’s would be kind of fun too.

Kimmi Says:

“I think Querrey is always like that; I remember when he and Cilic played that 5 setter at Wimbledon – the two of them are pretty subdued. ”

And people call delpo boring..this is very boring to me. I like Isner fire..much much better.

Kimmi Says:

C’mon Querrey..that was a good shot..give us a fist pump. two break points

And snuffed by roddick aces quickly

Kimmi Says:

Actually Querrey games have been holding serve quicker than Roddick

jane Says:

Maybe he’s trying to stay calm. It’s such a fine line between getting pumped up and also letting things bother you too much – just ask Nole. LOL. Maybe Sam is trying to stay even/cool/calm. But I know what you mean; it can be fun to see at least a little more emoting. Both these guys are swating the serves a.t.m. I still give the edge to Andy on experience.

jane Says:

Looks like a 3rd set tiebreak.

Kimmi Says:

Two bad errors from a nervous querrery gives roddick a mini break and he takes it. congrats the winners..great fight back from Roddick. Go hot sauce tomorrow.

jane Says:

Yes, Querrey did kind of blow that last tiebreak Kimmi, but that’s why I said “experience” would win. Should be a great final between Roddick and Verdasco. Roddick should win – he’s 9-2 in their H2H!!

Kimmi Says:

Soderling too much power for Youzhny, Its looking like easy straight set win.

Kimmi Says:

And youzhzy decides to retire. Obviously not doing well

6-4 2-0 soderling.

nevertheless, congrats to sod. great win after a poor start to the year. soderling is back!

Kimmi Says:

Interesting comment by Soda. He thinks that in the beginning of the year he did not play well because he was probably still tired from last season which to his standard he played a lot of matches. But after losing in the first round of the AO, he had a long rest and consequently feeling much fresher now.

Could this be what djokovic is feeling?

jane Says:

Could be Kimmi. Well congrats to Sod.

Sean Randall Says:

Roddick v. Blake first round? Awesome! I hope it happens (just thinking maybe Andy decides not to play).
