Juan Martin Del Potro announced yesterday that he will be unable to defending his Estoril title due to a stomach illness.

“It’s a shame not to have the chance to defend the title,” said Del Potro in a statement. “I had a great time when I went to Estoril, the tournament staff are the friendliest on the circuit and make you feel at home. However, I must prioritize my health and listen to the doctor’s advice.”

The Argentine is still expected to play the Madrid Masters next week.

The loss leaves fellow countryman Juan Monaco as the tournament No. 1 seed followed by Stanislas Wawrinka.

Physical issues are destroying this extraordinary player who has all the shots in his arsenal and stupendous power to rattle any opponent. But all those are going in vain due to his bad health and injuries. I hope he recovers soon to battle it out at Madrid, Rome and most importantly the French Open where he should be a dark horse.
