Juan Martin del Potro clay season got off to a promising start on Tuesday when he beat Yuichi Sugita 6-1, 6-2 in Estoril. But from the high to another low for the hard luck Argentine who had to withdraw from the tournament due to the death of his grandfather.

Del Potro was to play American Ryan Harrison but flew back to Argentina yesterday.

Del Potro is scheduled to play Madrid next week, however, there’s been no update on his status for the event. Or for Rome the following week.

Multiple wrist surgeries, tough draws and now this for the del Potro.

Earlier, Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the Estoril his grandfather passed away.

Humble Rafa Says:

An elderly member of a family dying happens to everyone. As sad as it may be, it is not unlucky. 100 year old people die, it’s a fact of life.

^dude, its one thing that your 3rd person comedy act is bad, but another level that you mock this.👎

His grandfather may RIP. It would have been nice from him, to die after the big Estoril tournament was over…

Good decision on DelPo’s part. Going back home to pay last respects to his grandpa and be with his family. Life happens.
