Andy Murray had an eventful Thursday. On the day Murray was scheduled to go to Buckingham Palace where he was to be awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire), he actually drew a random drug test in the morning delaying his departure for the big ceremony!

“They turned up at my door at 8.20am and I had a taxi booked for half past eight. I was a bit worried I was going to be late but the taxi did a great job in getting us here,” Murray told the Telegraph.

“It’s part of the job but when you have a day like today you are looking forward to, it’s the last thing you need.”

The Wimbledon champion said Prince William asked him about how his recovery from back surgery was progressing. Murray then jokingly told the Prince that his wife, Kate Middleton, had the better handwriting of two.

Margot Says:

Got your wish DA :)
Hope Andy had a gr8 day after that blooming blood test.
What impeccable timing from the ATP.

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Prince William is losing his hair on top,hes very handsome, but ive always preffered Prince Harry, who has quite a naughty streak sometimes.

Giles Says:

^^ Don’t blame ATP. WADA are responsible I think.

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Agree about the blood test, they certainly pick their moments, dont they?

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Thanks for the link Margot, your right about Andy looking thin, but he still looks good, and Kim is stunning.

Margot Says:

^ Yes, she looks so elegant :)

the DA Says:

Yes, thanks Mr. Gainey. Kim looks stunning but Andy also scrubs up well (when he makes the effort). I liked how Judy picked Wimbledon colors. It was nice to see him in public but this only increases my jonesing for his return.

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Agree with The DA thanks for the thread Tom Gainey.

Brando Says:

I’m happy for Andy but to be honest: I would have loved it if he did what the legendary Peter O Toole did when offered knighthood: told the monarchy to shove it up their behind. A true boss!

Anna Says:

This was great! It looks as if the Prince and Andy are old friends. I love Prince William and can’t imagine why anyone would want to offend him.

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Prince William is lovely, but Prince Harry has a bit of a naughty streak, also he seems more down to earth, like the kind of guy, that you could imagine going out for a pint with the lads down at the local pub IMO.

Kimmi Says:

Is Andy known as “Sir Andrew Murray” now?

Margot Says:

@kimmi
No, not a knighthood, thank goodness!

the DA Says:

I agree Margot. I really hope they delay that until he leaves the game. There’s no doubt he’s going to get one but it won’t do him any favors now.

Colin Says:

OBE does not stand for Order of British Excellence – not yet anyway. It’s still “Empire”.

It has been claimed the Queen wants any such change to be postponed until her reign ends. True, that claim was published in the ultra-conservative Daily Mail, so it might be wishful thinking. Needless to say, the Mail portrayed the campaign for change as being completely from the left wing, but as usual they were being economical with the truth. The original suggestion for change came from a cross-party group some years ago.

Hippy Chic – was it a blood test? Might have been a pee test, which wouldn’t take long.

Alex Says:

Depends if you can pee, lol.

SmashingAces Says:

The things you have to go through to meet royalty these days!! :)

Well done Andy, deserved!

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Colin lol sorry i get you point, but they still pick their moments dont they?

Perfect fan Says:

” Andy Murray Got Drug Tested, Then Met Prince William”

Was it a coincidence….or is it some kinda ritual before one meets the Royal Family ??……..no kidding, jus plain curious!!

the DA Says:

On another note, Rafa just withdrew from Basel due to being tired and not fully fit.

hawkeye Says:

Must be a silent ban.

hawkeye Says:

^^^Scratch that. Should have said:

Must be a silent ben, I mean ban.

Patson Says:

I’m glad he didn’t pull a Troicki.

Andy: “Hey I have to meet the prince, can I delay the test till tomorrow ?”

ATP official:”Sure we’ll come tomorrow.”

2 hours later Andy gets a text saying ‘you’ve been banned for 2 years for not taking the test.’

Andy: “Dudeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee WTF”

Hannah Says:

Why do a drugs test so long after having played a tournament? I’m not so sure it’s as random as they make out. Surely he’s on some kind of medication for his back, shouldn’t that make a difference if other players can get banned and they say it was due to a pill they took for jetlag or slimming.
I’m obviously not saying Andy’s taking drugs to enhance his performance, I’m just saying that timing is of the essence and this timing seems pointless.

Giles Says:

Drug tests are not always carried out during tourneys. They seem to do more tests when a player is off injured. Seems odd but there it is.

Suzette, Says:

Congratulations to Andy, well deserved. I din’t remember seeing him so thin and hope his is recovering well and comes back soon.

madmax Says:

MY thoughtts on OBEs, it’s just ridiculous anyone receiving an OBE when it’s roots are in fighting wars and being brave officers.

These type of awards should NOT be given to sports personalities or tennis players, or anyone other than fighting wars for their country.

It’s dreadful I think and members of the public who love this type of celebrityism (and let’s face it, just because he broke the back of the longest tennis drought in UK history, he gets a badge?).

Okay, so the queen likes tennis and so does William? So what?

And I would say the same for any sports personality. This type of award should be given for what it was meant for. It’s just degraded the whole reason for it coming into being in the first place.

And before any of you think it is anything to do with me not liking Andy. That is wrong. I have really a lot of respect for him, he has really emerged as a true force and I think he has given his all at Wimbledon, the Olympics, I think it is pretty special.

Benjamin Zephaniah got it right.

In 2003, Zephaniah was offered the Order of the British Empire, but publicly rejected it. In a subsequent article for The Guardian he elaborated upon his reaction to learning about being considered for the award and his reasons for rejecting it: “Me?

I thought, OBE me? Up yours, I thought. I get angry when I hear that word ’empire’; it reminds me of slavery, it reminds me of thousands of years of brutality, it reminds me of how my foremothers were raped and my forefathers brutalised…Benjamin Zephaniah OBE – no way Mr Blair, no way Mrs Queen. I am profoundly anti-empire.”

And now the OBE has become part of celebrity world and not used for it’s true meaning.

I accept the civil division honoraries, but for tennis? Do me a favour! King George V wished to honour the many thousands of people who had served in numerous non-combatant capacities during the First World War. Originally, the Order included only one division; however, in 1918, soon after its foundation, it was formally divided into Military and Civil Divisions.

And now lets post celebrity photos of Andy, girlfriend, mother, and pretend that the OBE now is something of value.

Give me a break.

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Madmax i share your thoughts on this completely, just to say though, and by the same token, what i said about the foundation thing on the Roger Lindt chocolates thread the other day,was nothing to do with Roger personally, its the whole celebrity charity promotion back scratching and feet kissing i find irritating, its all noteworthy dont get me wrong, but not something i care to make a big deal about, ive said it about Novak and Roger,i will say the same thing if a similar thread comes up about Rafa,so everyone here knows its nothing personal, yet i always get heckled about it,for simply having an opinion, even though Colin,Margot,Grendel amongst others have agreed with me,just saying.

madmax Says:

alison, you are entitled to your opinion. wish you would stop apologising for it.

I have never agreed with OBEs, it’s just ridiculous to give a badge to someone (whoever that person is), for “services to tennis”. I can’t stand it.

It smacks of self-important crap. The OBE was originally there for soldiers who fought for their country. It should be for nothing less.

When you know of someone who returned from Afghanistan having both his legs blown off, I know that person would NOT want an award. It was his choice to fight. To post celebrity videos of someone dressed in suit, getting a badge for tennis. It makes me sick to be honest. The world has gone mad. People tend to get caught up in the pomp and ceremony for all the wrong reasons. Makes me sad.

We all get caught up in the celebrity world from time to time, but to belittle the men who fight every day, by awarding an OBE to sporting celebrities is pathetic, distasteful and ridiculous in my view.

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Madmax i get your point,i did the 1st time, and i wasnt apologising anyway,i was just making a point about the foundation thing when that came up the other week, and TBH i hate all the kitch that goes with celebrities been knighted myself,i hate the whole celebrity culture,i watch these players playing tennis, but i certainly dont follow them with each and everything they do in their personal lives,it doesnt interest me as i have a life of my own.

courbon Says:

David Bowie also refused OBE ( not so much publicly )…

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

^One of my favorite ever singers^.

madmax Says:

courbon, I didn’t know that! Good for him! Making a statement! Not tempted by the “misapplied status” that an OBE brings.

courbon Says:

@ Hippy Chic & madmax: I agree with both of you.OBE has been made a farce over last 20 years…I could even understand to give a sportsman ( still, I don’t think it should be give to sportsman ) but like 7 Gold champion or some kind of best athlet of decade-maybe one or two would deserve like that in tha last 50 years.
Sir Elton John? For what? For 3 decent songs and playing for 3o years?
Yeah, David is a cool guy…

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Courbon i think OBEs should be given to the real unsung heros for fighting wars etc,my late father did national service, but was never given an award for it,and he would,ve told them to shove it up their wotsit if he,d been offered it,David was always one of my favorite sngers but kudos to him for declining,i have always had a hard time with pop stars and sportstars been knighted.

courbon Says:

@ Hippy Chic:I agree.Pretty much it should be for bravery in wars and somebody making society much better ( could be any profession but has to be significant!!) And Bowie is my most favourite singer..So, Rafa all the way to final now-Gasquet and Bedrych will be destroyed by Nadal.
I hope Novak gets to final but Delpotro (or even Fed????) is on obstacle.Big one.It should past Wawrinka (but you never know…)

madmax Says:

alison, having an OBE doesnt mean that you are knighted. You have changed your tune from earlier on.

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:
Agree with The DA thanks for the thread Tom Gainey.

October 17th, 2013 at 12:42 pm

This shouldn’t even have made news. An OBE is the for the soldiers, no one else.

Giles Says:

If you’re given something for free why decline the offer??

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Madmax a person has every right to change their minds if they wish,it was a nice story is what i meant both looked nice, im glad its not a knighthood as i dont care for them, but i dont know why you keep coming after me all of a sudden, your becoming a bit of a bully TBH.

madmax Says:

alison. We are all entitled to our opinion. You just tend to change yours when you want to make friends. Hit a nerve?

madmax Says:

And by the way, I don’t buy your “nicey nicey” attitude anymore. You switch your opinions all the time, when you read your posts (yes, I will try not to in future), it’s that, that makes me think, actually, who do you reeeealllly support, who are you reallllly trying to get on side with and why? We are super nobodies on this site.

We are no one. And why tell people here you care for 27 people? Do we really need to know your personal history? We all care about the real people in our lives, we just don’t need to broadcast it. And no way Alison are you a HHB as you mentioned previously. You are just a “nice” person. Right?

madmax Says:

Giles Says:

One word Giles. Integrity.

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

Madmax if you dont believe what im saying then fair enough, theres not much i can do about that,as far as im concerned thats you with the problem not me,i prefer to put my point across without the need for ranting and raving,i enjoy posting on this forum for the most part, and i enjoy interacting with other posters again for the most part, everyone knows im a Rafa fan,Murrays my second favorite, although i do admire and respect all the other players, and ive also defended them too,and also critiqued my favorites as i believe nobodys perfect, nothing to do with getting on side with people or been nicey/nicey,i just believe in been fair,as regards to my working life,i wont mention it again, even if someone asks me about it,and feel free to skip my posts if you wish its entirely up to you.

Tennis X Hippy Chic Says:

^Whats an HHB,?BY THE WAY.
