Tennis’s serving sensation Ivo Karlovic matched a record yesterday firing 44 aces in a 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 win over Daniel Brands in the first round of Zagreb.

The 6-foot-11 Karlovic’s 44 ace count matches Mark Philippoussis’s long-standing 3-set mark set back in 1995 at Kuala Lumpur.

Here are the most aces hit in a 3-set match on the ATP Tour since 1991 when aces first began being tracked (via ATP):

13 Comments for Most Aces Hit In A Tennis Match – Karlovic Fires 3-Set Record 44 In Zagreb [Chart]

Margot Says:

Who on earth enjoys this kind of tennis? Is it a male thing? Enlighten me someone…anyone!

Giles Says:

The ATP should introduce a new tournament entitled “Aces High”. The player hitting the highest number of aces wins the tournament.
Winner: Karlovic

Mr. Larvey Says:

@Giles

And they should play only Iron Maiden during the change overs :)

queen Says:

When u have no brain for the game u learn how to ace. U need to get the points somehow…

Ben Pronin Says:

These are anomolies for the most part. Sometimes it’s pretty cool. But notice how most of the players lost the matches anyway.

Ben Pronin Says:

“When u have no brain for the game u learn how to ace”

Because the guys who have a brain for the game would rather not get 2 sets worth of free points.

RZ Says:

These high numbers of aces only really happen because the opponent – win or lose – plays tough. If the opponent wasn’t up to a challenge and prolonged the match, there wouldn’t be an opportunity for so many aces.

Colin Says:

Queen, what sort of brain is used by people who write postings in textspeak. Is your time so extraordinarily valuable that you can’t use a few more keystrokes? Or is it that you can’t spell?

Regarding Karlovic, there is a tendency to talk as if his serving relied merely on his great height. Surely he must also have a very good and reliable service action.

SG1 Says:

Kuerten aced Nestor 47 times? What? How does this even make sense?

SG1 Says:

Fascinating that Pistol Pete was nowhere to be found on this list. Serve and nothing else…yeah right.

Djokerfan Says:

The last time I checked, the serve was as much part of tennis as a forehand. Do people really think it’s easy to go there and serve ace after ace?

Djokerfan Says:

SG1, Pete was a fantastic player. Only the ignorant would say he was only serve.

Djokerfan Says:

SG1, the score was 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5. That is quite a lot of games per set.
