Rafael Nadal was a special guest of honor Sunday at a football game in Rio de Janeiro. Nadal and good friend Juan Monaco made use of the day off by visiting Maracanã stadium to watch Flamengo play Vasco. And before the game, Nadal was the center of attention.

“I think it was a very special experience,” Nadal said. “I’m a big fan of sports, of football, and this is one of the most important stadiums in the world. It has a lot of history and with the renovations it looks very nice. I think that it’s going to be a very special stadium for the World Cup. It was an honor to have the opportunity to do the match kick off here.”

The top ranked Nadal will play Tuesday night in Rio against countryman Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Brando Says:

Wow- the Maracana stadium. Lucky Rafa.

It’s arguably the greatest of all football stadiums with a very unique history. It once could host an insane 200,000 strong crowd in the past.

Imagine that carnival atmosphere.

Hippy Chic Says:

Nice scenes well done Rafa.
