Grigor Dimitrov Credits Girlfriend Maria Sharapova For Recent Success

Grigor Dimitrov has been one of the new breakthrough stars on the tour this year. After his Queen’s Club win on Sunday, the 23-year-old has already won titles on all three surfaces this year and sits on the edge of the Top 10 at No. 13.

“I’m excited with the progress that I have so far, but my goals are way too high,” said Dimitrov. “So I wouldn’t call it a breakthrough or a coming to an age or any of that because I’m competing every week.

“Every week I want to be out there and give 100% for myself every day. Whether it’s going to be, you know, that tournament or any other bigger ones means just something that I do with passion and I just love to compete.”

But the Bulgarian has had some help. In addition to new coach Roger Rasheed, who came aboard last fall, Dimitrov has the support of girlfriend and 5-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova who was in the stands watching his big win. The two have been dating since the start of last year, and the partnership is really paying off.

“This is something that is very touching for me,” Dimitrov said Sunday. “I always feel comfortable when I have the closest people around me and I have my team on a good level.

“Of course that adds up and you feel even more determined because you know that you’re embraced either way. I mean, she’s just been unbelievable, with me throughout all the year so far and just supporting me. You know, I think the feeling is pretty mutual. I hope that’s not going to be the last tournament that she’s at.”

Dimitrov also has the support of Roger Federer after signing on to to Roger’s “Team 8” management agency last year.

“Of course I think having Maria on my side definitely adds up, and a tremendous champion like her, there is a lot to learn,” he said. “But it’s still completely different areas in a way, women’s tennis and men’s tennis. But there is certainly a good amount that I have learned throughout so far.

“On the other hand, I have Roger all the time next to me, and, you know, that gives me confidence. I’m more than happy that most of the times we’re on the same page when it comes to work and practice, so that’s a good sign.”
