Serena Williams overcame another first set deficit to avenge her French Open second round loss to Garbine Muguruza today in the Australian Open fourth round.
The 33-year-old Williams has won the tournament five times, but hasn’t made the finals since winning in 2010. As one of the greats of the game – she’s chasing Steffi Graf’s record 22 Grand Slams – she has other interests including being a part owner of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.
Since it’s Super Bowl week, Serena had some fun picking out a team made up of tennis players.
“I would love to be a linebacker,” Serena said. “I just like to block. Okay, I’ll be a quarterback. I don’t know. Nadal would be a good runningback because he’s low and he can run fast. Roger would be a good quarterback. He’d be a great quarterback. What about some of the ladies? Venus, wide receiver. Absolutely wide receiver.
“Genie would be a good cornerback. Maria, I’m not sure. I don’t know. Maybe she’s a good cornerback as well because she’d be able to be out in the field, produce some blocks. It would be fun. We should all get together and play.”
On a more serious matter, Serena and Venus are one win away from a semifinal on Thursday. Before then Serena has to get past 2014 Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova.
“She is a really good player,” said Serena. “To be her size, she hits so hard and she plays so well. She’s just such a power, compact, great player. I just have to stay focused and not underestimate her. She actually almost beat me before. I want to make sure I come ready and prepared.”
