Further indicating an imminent return, Juan Martin del Potro received a wildcard into next week’s Indian Wells Masters event. The Argentine hasn’t played since Sydney after undergoing a second wrist surgery in January.

Ranked No. 614, del Potro missed almost all of 2014, so he could have entered Indian Wells via an injury protection. However, a wildcard and the fact he and Marin Cilic are on the doubles list, is no guarantee he will turn up in California.

Earlier this week he made it clear he wanted to return this month.

Other main draw wild cards awarded by the tournament, which begins 10 March, include Tim Smyczek, Ryan Harrison, Denis Kudla and Austin Krajicek.

Women’s wildcards went to Nicole Gibbs, Taylor Townsend, Grace Min, Louisa Chirico, Sachia Vickery, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and teenager Donna Vekic

SG1 Says:

I don’t think they’d necessarily give him a wildcard unless he asked for it. Don’t know the ATP protocols for wildcard invitations.

I don’t think they’d have issued the wildcard if he wasn’t going to play. Sure hope he does and sure hope he’s healthy!

RZ Says:

@SG1 – he would have needed to request one, but there is precedent in the past for players requesting a wild card and then not playing due to illness or injury (recently happened with Genie Bouchard in Dubai).

Let’s hope DelPo is healthy and able to play, but I hope he doesn’t rush his return as it could do more damage to his wrist.

Hippy Chick Says:

Best of luck to Delpo and Emily, for a safe and profitable return to tennis, not expecting miracles, baby steps at first, welcome back….

SR69 Says:

While most sites state as if he’s accepted & guaranteed playing you correctly state it’s been given but no one knows yet if he’ll accept .. his interview earlier this week doesn’t seem likely to. Cudos to you!!! You’ve gained my following :-D

Whether he accepts or waits (which I think would be wise to do) his return [Part Deux] is near which is very exciting for the tennis world!!
