Petra Kvitova will go into her Wimbledon title defense next week without any grass court preparation. The 2-time Wimbledon champion announced today that she has pulled out of the Eastbourne grass tune-up due to a viral illness.

“I have a sore throat. I have to stay in bed, drink tea and rest,” she said. “I didn’t feel well when I came here last Thursday, I had to make this decision.

“I hope to be fine for Wimbledon. I’ll stay here in Eastbourne and then slowly move to London.”

Kvitova was to be the top seed at the tournament.

Leo Says:

Bad luck… doesn’t seem a good sign for Wimbledon title defense. She’s my fave WTA player, but boy just wish she knew how to compete day in and day out.

RZ Says:

She seems to have a weak immune system and I don’t think any of the other top pros get sick as often. I hope she can be healthy for Wimbledon and give a good defense.

jalep Says:

Hope it’s not mono :(

Margot Says:

Terrific win for Jo, beats a top 10 player! And an absolutely delightful interviewee.
