Top seed and world No. 5 Kei Nishikori suffered a first round loss to home favorite Tomaz Bellucci 6-4, 6-3 in the first round at Rio Tuesday night.

“Actually everything didn’t work well,” said Nishikori. “Probably the condition changed a lot from last week: bounce really high and the balls are really heavy. The ball is the most difficult to adjust. I couldn’t feel anything today. I think it wasn’t my day.”

After dropping the opening set, the Japanese hammered his racquet.

Nishikori was just in the Buenos Aires final on Sunday when he lost to Alexandr Dolgopolov.

The loss was Nishikori first opening round defeat at an event since falling to Benoit Paire at the 2015 US Open.

Before the win, Bellucci was just 1-18 vs. Top 5 players having beaten No. 4 Andy Murray at 2011 Madrid.
