Novak Djokovic: It Was Amazing To Watch Roger Federer Win The Australian Open

Novak Djokovic is making his first appearance in Mexico this week after taking a surprise wildcard into Acapulco. Before his match today against Martin Klizan, the Serb talked to the press among other things Roger Federer’s big win at the Australian Open.

“It was amazing to see. Roger win the Australian Open, at his age, after injury and after being absent for so long. It’s quite impressive. I congratulate him for that. He never ceases to impress everybody, and it was great to see a Federer-Nadal final,” Djokovic said.

“I think it’s very important for the sport of tennis that these two guys are back in Grand Slam finals, winning trophies, because they are the icons of tennis. They have contributed so much to the popularity of the sport worldwide.”

Djokovic of course was stunned in the second round by Denis Istomin in Melbourne. A loss he says he can learn from.

“I haven’t experienced the first-week Australian Open loss for many years,” Djokovic said. “It’s kind of normal and expected to go through those times when you’re not playing as best as you can maybe, as best as you want to be, or maybe the opponent has an amazing day. It’s sport. You have to deal with it, and you can always learn much more from the losses.”

Now ranked No. 2, Djokovic has title points to defend at Indian Wells and Miami next month.

Humble Rafa Says:

Hard to believe Skeeze didn’t comment first. I hear his cats are sick. Priorities..just like the Egg Lover.

AndyMira Says:

Novak always very gracious and respectful towards everybody especially his rivals…one of his many qualities that i admire so much!Vamos Nole!!!

Chrisford1 Says:

Perhaps Djokovic’s finest trait as a sportsman. He plays to win and will fight and sometimes rage in a match, but when it is over, and he loses (a rarity) – he is almost without fail very gracious.
When he is not in the fight and one of his main rivals wins a final, he seems genuinely happy for them. Pleased that Delpo came back to play Andy in the Olympics Final, very complimentary of Andy’s 2nd gold medal effort.
And for Roger, who has a complicated history with Nole, happy for Roger and saying it is great for tennis Fedal played out one one time. And Djokovic’s rep is such these days that few doubt his sincerity. Even with Roger.
