Rafael Nadal begins his bid to win a first Miami Open title Friday in a second round match against Dudi Sela of Israel.
“Winning Miami is not an obsession. I would love to add Miami to my CV. The opportunities are not eternal, although I hope to have more in the future,” Nadal said earlier in the week. “I had four chances and in two of them I was very close. Normally, when you have those chances you have to take them.”
Nadal, a 4-time Miami runner-up, is 14-4 on the season with finalist finishes at the Australian Open and Acapulco, both on hard courts. Sela has beaten a Top 10 players since 2010 Queen’s where he stunned Andy Roddick.
2016 finalist Kei Nishikori takes the court against big-serving Kevin Anderson. Nishikori has won 12 of his last 14 matches at the event.
“I feel very relaxed here, very open,” Nishikori said on Tuesday. “I feel like I’m at home.
““I have good memories here.”
Milos Raonic makes his return from a hamstring injury against Viktor Troicki in a battle of big servers.
And Grigor Dimitrov challenges Guido Pella.
Yesterday, youngsters Frances Tiafoe, Borna Coric and Andrey Rublev led the way into the second round.
Because of rain, two matches from the first round are still to be completed: Dolgopolov-Jaziri and Robert-Bellucci.
