Two of the greats of the game resume their rivalry Sunday in the Miami Open final. It’s the 37th meeting between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, a rivalry which first began in Miami back in 2004 when a 17-year-old Nadal stunned Federer.

Nadal leads 23-13 but Federer has turned the tables winning their last three meetings.

Nadal is 14-8 in final meetings and owns a 12-5 advantage in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments (7-3 in finals). In their last Miami meeting in the 2011 sermi-finals, Nadal won 63 62. Since Nadal’s last win in the semi-finals at the 2014 Australian Open, Federer won in the final of his hometown Basel tournament in 2015. And after not meeting last year, Federer rallied to win in five sets at the Australian Open on Jan. 29 to earn his 18th Grand Slam crown, and in the 4R at ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells on Mar. 15.

jatin Says:

Bring it on

Giles Says:

Yes. Bring it on indeed!!
Vamos Champ!

Nits Says:

Just few more minutes of wait

Vinod Says:

Any links to watch?

madmax Says:

Game on!

Come on Fed!

Allez, you beauty.

FedExpress Says:

wow. Bp already

saved

FedExpress Says:

where are the 1st serves?

FedExpress Says:

another BP saved.

FedExpress Says:

good hold in the end.

FedExpress Says:

Rafa has a clear gameplan how to serve

FedExpress Says:

Nadal serving better than Fed

Van orten Says:

Yeah Rafa and his plans

jatin Says:

Rafa serving well

FedExpress Says:

some good volleys and backhands in this game

good hold. 2-1 Fed

jatin Says:

Fed already has 9 winners.

jatin Says:

Rafa is going more on fed’s forehand side with his serve. Nice change, mixing it up a lot.

FedExpress Says:

and keeping the rallies long, jatin

FedExpress Says:

pressure applied by fed

0-30

jatin Says:

Its more of Rafa’s CC backhand vs fed’s forehand.

FedExpress Says:

that was a fail from Fed

should have had 2 BPs

madmax Says:

Yeah, Rafa has definitely changed his game plan – but he needed to – this is what Moya said:

One of the most important things to win for Nadal will be not to allow Federer to dictate points hitting the backhand, which became really a strength for him this year. ‘For many years Rafa played on his backhand in order to make him do unforced errors. Now it’s changed.

Federer changed his game and it’s up to Rafa and his team to change his game not to feel Federer comfortable.

The ideal thing for Rafa is not to be far away from the baseline and not to see Federer playing aggressive. Rafa will have to serve well, which he did in most of the matches in Miami. Holding his serve, the games could be balanced later [in the set]. On 3-all or 4-all… Roger may hesitate.’

‘Anyway, when it’s time to attack, usually Federer doesn’t make errors’, Moya admitted.

Pretty tense start…

FedExpress Says:

BP Fed

madmax Says:

Fedexpress,

Keep it together in this match please. :-)

FedExpress Says:

humidity should favour nadal but it isnt

FedExpress Says:

BP saved

madmax Says:

Come on Fed.

Come on.

Early days.

Tense.

FedExpress Says:

Fed making Nadal work than Fog did all match

FedExpress Says:

so 2 chances to break wasted by both

2-2

jatin Says:

Good forehand by fed.

FedExpress Says:

Fed ultra aggressive. wants to finish the point quickly as possible

jatin Says:

Fed must hold his service games as rafa is mixing it up quite well

jatin Says:

Great aggressive play

FedExpress Says:

Nadals FH firing

Deuce

jatin Says:

Rafa’s backhand .. wow

FedExpress Says:

oh myy. BP Nadal after 40-15

FedExpress Says:

Nadal hitting with depth. And Fed having problem when he is on backfoot

jatin Says:

Nice escape there

FedExpress Says:

5 games and 25 mins played. Intense match.

jatin Says:

Fed must be aggressive here.

Nits Says:

Superb start

FedExpress Says:

Confidence is keeping Fed in this set I feel.

jatin Says:

0-15

FedExpress Says:

Nadal targeting Feds FH with his serve

madmax Says:

Some super shots by Nadal. He has really thought about changing a few things a la Moya.

Fed would have been expecting that though.

Got to stay aggressive, not let up.

FedExpress Says:

Oh my godness

FedExpress Says:

Another BP saved by nadal

FedExpress Says:

123 mph serve by nadal lol

3-3

jatin Says:

Both saving 3-3 break points so far
3-3

jatin Says:

Keep the pressure going fed.

FedExpress Says:

Petchy is having a boner everytime Nadal hits a “normal” FH

FedExpress Says:

30-30

Nadal setting up the points nicely

FedExpress Says:

awful from fed

why back to nadal

BP nadal

FedExpress Says:

Wow. Clutch.

FedExpress Says:

but this court is sooooooo slow.

jatin Says:

Both players working so hard to save break points today.

jatin Says:

Hope fed allows himself another break point opportunity in this game

jatin Says:

Fed Express
Yeah, super slow

FedExpress Says:

it feels like they are playing on clay

FedExpress Says:

some brilliant FHs

15-30

FedExpress Says:

madmax Says:

Jatin!

Fedexpress!

Federer!

Come on!

jatin Says:

LETS GO ROGER

jatin Says:

madmax you tooo… comon

FedExpress Says:

tense

30-15

dont waste the hard work

madmax Says:

Cannot beat The Guardian Live with their humour:

Federer breaks! First set: Federer 5-3 Nadal* (*denotes server)

Once again, one of our protagonists finds himself in trouble on his serve – and once again he negotiates a way out. Rafa rips a backhand down the line – it was breaking the speed limit in most countries around the world – before another forehand winner from Roger makes it 30-40. A healthy dose of deuces then ensues (I believe the technical term is Epic Tussle) before we have a break when Nadal nets. That one was coming – but it could have been either player that lost their serve.

EPIC TUSSLE

Berghain Says:

Fed looks really calm today. Was worried he was tired or something. But it is looking good! :)

jatin Says:

Amazing set by fed…. handled rafa’s onslaught very very well.
18 winners so far..
Comon fed,, just one more set

madmax Says:

very tense Fed Express, but feeling the groove.

FedExpress Says:

jatin, madmax

life is so wonderful right now

Daniel Says:

Damm, thought the match would be 3 pm local time here in RIo. Was at the beach arrive home and turn TV and Federer already 6-3. Wow!!
Missed another great set as it seems.

jatin Says:

Daniel.
Yeah it was an INTENSE first set.. Rafa playing very well, had many opportunities but fed saved them with amazing and CLUTCH play.
Hope fed keep this level for just 1 set now and take LONGGGG vacation. :)

jatin Says:

Fed express
Rafa could come back any moment, he is playing very well as well. Hope life continues to be wonderful though

Daniel Says:

Wow, read and they were having problem holding all the time. Seems Nadal come out to play

madmax Says:

Rafa never, ever gives up. But then, neither does Fed.

WOW, I am having difficulty breathing….

El_Flaco Says:

Interesting that Nadal is hitting most of his serves to Fed’s forehand. Nadal did something similar years ago when Djoker was on a big winning streak against him. He started hitting most serves to his forehand in the Monte Carlo final 2012.. It definitely confused Djoker and contributed to Nadal going from a 7 match losing streak to a 3 match win streak.

Daniel Says:

3 serves to Fed’s FH.

madmax Says:

Yes, completely different game plan by Rafa today, but Carlos Moya said as much – I am pretty certain that Fed would have taken that into account – would be foolish not to.

Oh, these game plans. Designed to confuse and excite.

madmax Says:

Reverse psychology Daniel.

Daniel Says:

And he can occasionally serve to his BH to surprised. At least he got more inside Fed’s head as he is guessing more where he will serve.

FedExpress Says:

Nadal will fightm so will Fed

jatin Says:

Rafa serving to fed’s forehand all the time.. Who would have thought ?

Van orten Says:

Fed is all over nadal being honest. Nadal short all the time . Fed needs to maintain for one more re set his normal form he has right now . Vamos roger Vamos

Berghain Says:

those forehands by Fed are insane

FedExpress Says:

Nadal is being outfooted three times

jatin Says:

Fed has raised his level of play.. First love hold to him

jatin Says:

Rafa outacing fed

FedExpress Says:

Can Fed maintain the intensity till the end?

jatin Says:

Rafa mixing it up well on his serves. Fed has to be aware and keep on serving well.

Daniel Says:

This 2 service gams I watched he won 6 free points. 1 ace, and 5 Fed’s return miss. too much unreturned serves for 11 points. Fed needs to place the returns on court.

FedExpress Says:

Ljubicic, where were you from 2004 on? Oh you were an actice player hehehe

Daniel Says:

Nadal 56% on second serves points won and even so lost the set.

Fed sublime touch

FedExpress Says:

Good game from Fed

2-2

jatin Says:

Federer SPECIAL

Daniel Says:

Fed flawless 2 love game. Time to make a run in Nadal’s serve.

Daniel Says:

He can’t return. 2 more free points, very unusual

FedExpress Says:

Fed got his serving back but he lost his returning game in between

Daniel Says:

Even secon serves on his FH he is missing!!!

jatin Says:

Rafa’s service is bothering fed.

FedExpress Says:

Nadal will break Fed once I feel. Hopefully the timing is not wrong.

jatin Says:

Fed has to keep on serving well. He can’t afford a single blip as Rafa’s service games are clearly bothering fed. Especially on his forehand side

Daniel Says:

He wil have to adapt, step 1 feet behind and adds more spin to it. Make him play.

Who would have thought Nadal would be winning this match free points on his serve.

FedExpress Says:

High kick 2nd serve is working a treat for fed so far

40-0

El_Flaco Says:

Nadal’s serve is keeping him in the match because he isn’t playing very well.

Daniel Says:

Three love gams, hope he keeps that up. Even with Nadal serving great, he is doing his part and holding easy.

jatin Says:

Keep on serving like this fed. Now, build the pressure

Daniel Says:

2 FH returns in. 15-15

FedExpress Says:

UE off the BH wing

FedExpress Says:

BP Fed

That backhand again

Daniel Says:

Nice BH, BP!

FedExpress Says:

oh noooooo feddddddd

Daniel Says:

Brave Nadal. Drop shot BP down, very risky but he was rewarded

FedExpress Says:

should have gon DTL

FedExpress Says:

Another BP

Come on Fed

Daniel Says:

Second serve Please Nadal!

El_Flaco Says:

Nadal trying to pump himself up, but now facing another bp…

FedExpress Says:

Hmm

this game is so key

El_Flaco Says:

Big hold by Nadal.

FedExpress Says:

4-3

should have hit dtl or right back to nadal when fed got to the drop shot

dont lose your serve till TB fed. and if you wanna lose the set then get broken here or lose the TB so that you can serve first in the 3rd

Daniel Says:

1-8 in BP today.

Now go on and keep the great serving this set Fed. He was making move in Nadal’s serve game by game. First Nadal held to love, than 15. than 40-30 and now he had BP. IF he keeps the trend he will break in one of next 2 games:-)

Do his part and keep holding easy.

jatin Says:

Now, fed has to hold good again. Rafa played Clutch there

FedExpress Says:

Please no hangover game, Fed.

it happens so often after such games

FedExpress Says:

0-15
15-15

tense

FedExpress Says:

30-30

next point so curcial

Daniel Says:

30-30, dangerous time. Time to serve big

Daniel Says:

Nadal leaving ball short

FedExpress Says:

Clutch serving

yeah but Fed was not a gimmie the last 5 years to punish the short balls. netted them or hit them long

Daniel Says:

Pressure back on Nadal, 4-4. A break now can seal the match

madmax Says:

Keep believing Fed and serve with intuition and heart!

jatin Says:

Great hold by fed

FedExpress Says:

Think that game where he served for the AO title and saved two Bps along the way gave sky high confidence when he is under pressure vs nadaö

ohhhhhhhhh fed

Daniel Says:

Damm, to much, sitter FH to go up 15-30 after a great return to Nadal’s feet. Will cost him

madmax Says:

Jatin,

Tense. Tense. Tense.

Clutch tennis, great points by both.

Rafa warrior. Fed Warrior.

Daniel Says:

30-30, could be BP already

FedExpress Says:

BP

but fed got luck (i dont care)

Daniel Says:

Yes, lucky shot and fantastic lobby, 30-40 another game with BP. Huge point!

madmax Says:

Arghghghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Come on!

madmax Says:

HUGGGGEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

FedExpress Says:

Break Federer

serving for the title

please no dramas. serve it out.please

and have nice long vacation

jatin Says:

GOT HIM

Daniel Says:

DTL return, 5-4 and will serve for the match.

So far, prefect set, only lost 2 points on serve. Keep the serve going and close the deal!

FedExpress Says:

madmax, jatin, daniel

fingers crossed he does it now.

Daniel Says:

Told ya he would keep the trend and break:-)

jatin Says:

Fed is so calm all match. Playing freely, he just have to continue it for 1 more game

Daniel Says:

Tense start, DF. kkkk

FedExpress Says:

double fault to start

please

madmax Says:

Daniel, I am listening to you right now.

It is just like karma, keeping calm, but oh boy.

Tense.

FedExpress Says:

GENIUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Berghain Says:

holly crap! THAT DTL BACKHAND!!!

madmax Says:

It’s not over until it’s over.

Never.

Keeping it calm now.

This is so flippin’ tense.

El_Flaco Says:

Nadal can’t believe Fed made that backhand. Demoralizing.

jatin Says:

WHAT A SHOT SHOT SHOT

FedExpress Says:

Thank you rafa for that UE

30-15

jatin Says:

2 more

FedExpress Says:

30.30

come one fed

El_Flaco Says:

Wow! Mirka looks stressed!

FedExpress Says:

oh my godness
that FH on the line

he has big balls

Daniel Says:

Inside out FH painting the line. MP 1 ace now, so few today, only 4

madmax Says:

I’m dying here.

Berghain Says:

wELL DONE fED! AMAZING JUST AMAZING

FedExpress Says:

congratz to jatin, madmax, daniel

now i am going to escalate

jatin Says:

GOD… I am TOO EMOTIONAL right now..,
LOVE YOU FED… What a perforamce…..
Congrts to all fellow fed fans… fedexpress, daniel, skeezer, madmax etc

Pitchaboy Says:

I told u so. These days Fed lives in Rafa’s head

Van orten Says:

What is that I am so proud and really without words . 1981 the year we were born . Thank u roger for being such a role model to never give up . I love u man I love u guys congrats to all . This is amazing simply amazing

DC Says:

Pure awesomeness from thevaweaommest shotmaker.
What a delightfully tense match
Nadal made Fed work for every one of those 29 winners.
Great display by both players.

jatin Says:

Now take a long vacation fed. You have done everything you possibly could. Just rest up your body and don’t overplay at this age too much.. You DESERVE IT…. :)

FedExpress Says:

let’s embrace ourselves jatin, daniel, madmax

i cant f.ing believe it.

gonzalowski Says:

congrats to Fed!!, the best player today.
He had a bit luck in the last game anyway :(

Rafa didn’t get find the lines with his shots, and was struggling all the way

madmax Says:

Fed Express!

I am here!

Jatin, Skeezer, Daniel, these are certainly wonderful, wonderful moments for us.

Rafa fans, especially Alison, Hippy, Gypsey, where are you girl? Sorry for you and for Oki – and Kimberly, but either way, would not have minded, not at all.

Loved to watch these two guys play again – so proud, so proud.

Federer!

Amazing – this is so unbelievable. Unbelievable success this year.

Daniel Says:

Wow, and the thing is, had Nadal not served this great it could have been easier.

Fed real enjoying tennis right now. Modern game at 35 going 4 straight on his nemesis.

Back at #4 and absolute #1 on the year with the triplet AO, IW, Miami for the second time.

Unfreakingbelievable!

Can he translate this game lan t clay against Nadal, because if he was able to win on three “slower HC surface: imagine what he can do against Nadal is they play Cincy, USO, Shangai, Paris and indoors.
23-14 HxH and suddenly Fed making it a decent HxH doesn’t look out of the picture. If he can win 6 of the next 8 it could end 25-20.

Now he will have to re-evaluate his schedule, see what he will play on clay. And now set new targets.

Pretty sure he will be top 4 seed for Wimbledon and suddenly #1 starts to become a reality. Let’s see how things will pan out n clay with the other 3. Nadal sure won’t go away and would be very surprised if he doesn’t win of the 3 Masters on clay.

Djoko 30
Ndal 28
Fed 26

Congrats fellow Fed fans. what a fun ride this Q1 was, hope he can continues playing with this passion, easy and calm. Totally revamp game and free on his mind. Just going for his shots!

Daniel Says:

Van Orten, I am also from 81!

Tennisfansince1976 Says:

Wow just unbelievable. At age 35 after a 6 month layoff Fed has completed the AO/IW/Miami triple beating Nadal in all 3 tournaments, the last 2 in straight sets! Against Nadal that makes 4 matches in a row, 5 sets in a row, 9 sets to 3. And I never thought I’d be saying this but not only is he beating Nadal but it kind of looks like he is in his head! Not to fret though Nadal fans, clay is next and I think your man looks to be the favorite on the dirt again this year.

jatin Says:

Feeling sorry for rafa fans.. specially okigal, gypsygirl etc. But he is playing some amazing tennis. It was his 4th final of the year I guess. And so HUMBLE as ever in his speech. Salute to his LEGEND of the game (Rafa nadal).
Its just amazing to see these two still contesting for finals.

HAIL Roger
VAMOUS Rafa

Daniel Says:

One thing is for sure, 2020 Nadal will be in Miami finals!

Now with clay on, seems will be his time to shine after this great comeback also this season. Had it not fir Federer he could have win these 3 tourneys, as he lost only to Fed in all: AO/IW/Miami

But his problems on HC continues, he just can’t win title on HC again and will be very hard to do it second half of the season o faster courts.

Colin Says:

I found this match disappointing. Time and again Roger would hit a well placed shot that Rafa could not return, and I was thinking “Andy or Nole (at their best)would have got to that and maybe even hit a winner off it

madmax Says:

Daniel, it’s 3 Miami Titles I think,

2005
2006
2017

A mere 11 years after the second time he won it!

Daniel Says:

3 finals lost this year satin: AO to Fed, Acapulco to Query and Miami again to Fed.

Fed at 91 titles (getting closer and closer to surpassing Lendl), winning a Miami title after 12 yeas since his last one in 2006. Wow

Colin Says:

I don’t know why, but my message sort of froze, and I couldn’t add the final quotation marks,or even a full stop.

El_Flaco Says:

Fed just said only playing the French this year, no other clay tourneys.

DC Says:

Feds had to beat Nadal for each of his titles this year.
And he’s done it with Style and responded to his critics who said he did not have an answer to Nadal.
Fed could have retired as goat years ago; however like a true champ, he stuck around , improved his game and found an answer with his one handed backhand.
He has without doubt, removed any and every weakness from his game. Not only that, at 35 years , he is winning in style, outlasting amd outhitting the best from his generation, his prior generation and then the generation prior to that.

naderer Says:

Congrats to Fed. Keep ur head high Nadal. As for us fans, we’re lucky to witness this.

FedExpress Says:

Unreal to be real.

Van orten Says:

So cool Daniel . We are “the 81sts” ! Let’s start another band. Wow man so pumped up. It’s crazy hahahhaha

Daniel Says:

Fed now getting the upper hand on HC in their HxH, 10-9 and 2-1 on grass, 12-10 outside clay.

HC
1-3 in AO
0-1 in Duabi
2-1 in IW
2-2 in Miami
0-1 in Cincy
1-0 in Basel
4-1 in WTF

Slow HC is 6-5 Nadal (AO, IW, Miami) and fast HC is 5-3 Federer. But as the trend in this year if they play more on fast HC the super advantage will be Fed. Off course he will have to keep this level and Nadal also can improve a few things. His serve was already more a weapon today but his FH error are still high, he made the same amount as Fed but far fewer winners.

Very curious to see how Fed will play on clay now and where. He will probably not play both Madrid and Rome, unless he loses early in Madrid. Most likely skips MC, but who knows, maybe he is feeling so well in his head that will translate to his physical endurance and he can compete there.

I don’t think he wants to lose momentum, right now he seems “invincible”, 19-1 on the season and he needs to enter grass play this well.

J.S. Says:

FED was better….I expected more from Rafa, congrats!

I am off to Monte Catlo in a couple weeks and will try to be as good as Kimberly!!! :)

PEACE

Tennisfansince1976 Says:

Before this year started I never would have thought the rankings would be what they are. Fed #1, Rafa #2 just like old times. The current rolling year #1 Murray is at #12 on this year and #2 Novak Djokovic is all the way down at #22!. Outside the top 20. As Wallace Shawn said in the princess bride, “inconceivable!” Nadal is actually in great shape to challenge for #1. He is 1800 points behind Fed with 5000 max points coming up on clay. Of course, a masters or two or a slam would get the other two back in contention as well.

Daniel Says:

El_Flanco, when did he said that?

Ge maybe should add Madrid. If he only plays RG, his next match will only happen on May 29th or 30th, that is 58-59 days from today: 2 months off. That will be a bit crazy with his form and momentum, but he won a Slam last time he got a long layoff, so…hehe

Colleen Clancy Says:

He’s just said he probably won’t play till the french, his body needs a rest.

FedExpress Says:

Where Collen, where did he said it?

Tennisfansince1976 Says:

@dc that is true except I don’t think there is really anybody left from his generation. Maybe Berdych and Ferrer.

jatin Says:

I think its a smart decision. He has nothing left to prove anymore. Should just focus on French and the grass court season. Maybe he could add rome for some practice, who knows.
But his body needs rest now. He is going to be 36 soon. :)

jatin Says:

Roger Federer to Brad Gilbert: “I probably won’t play any clay court events except the French. I need a rest. My body needs healing.”

Willow Says:

Madmax its all cool, ive just no desire to post much anymore, im having such a great time away from tennis, and something really amazing happened to me a few weeks back that tennis has taken a back seat in priorities now, i still enjoy it, but i no longer can be bothered to get stressed about it, Federers playing amazing, congrats to him and his fans here on amazing season winning another title :-) ….

FedExpress Says:

Thanks jatin, deserved. Understandable.

Daniel Says:

Nadal likes that Fed won’t play on clay pre R;-), just making fun.

madmax Says:

Richard Deitsch – Reporter for Sports Illustrated
@richarddeitsch

It’s not my decision and YES IT’S JUST APRIL: But, hell, I’m ready to give Roger Federer the SI Sportsman of the Year for 2017.

Daniel,

Fed has won 3 Miami titles now, not 2. Last one was back in 2006 – against Nadal and Berdych in 2005, though I may have reversed them.

I had heard that he would play Madrid – but hell. He has done enough at the start of this year. So it’s all gravy as Skeezer would say.

Giles Says:

Let fed have his fun, god knows how much he suffered at the hands of Rafa.

Daniel Says:

I know that madmax. Where did I typed the he only won just 2. Is his second triple AO IW and Miami, he only won those 3 before once, in 2006. Now his second triplle. Djoko has 3, 2011, 2015 and 2016. Third straigt year that a player wins it.

Daniel Says:

Actually he is right not playing any clay tune up. The surface is not forgiving on veteran he will most likelly lose to one of the other Big 4 and maybe even lose the mental upper hand he has on Nadal now. He needs to rest and repare for grass.

Off course seems too long without any official match but he will practice on it and prepare for Garros. Than 3 weeks on rass with Stytgart, to fine tune his game, Halle where he had huge success and the cream on top and highlight target of all hos season: Wimbledon, where he sure will contend for the title in this form bar injury. Let Nadal, Djoko and Murray fight eachnother off on clay. Nadal is hungry and the other tow have to regain match form and prove themselves after slumpy first Quarter.

Colleen Says:

Giles,

I shouldn’t take the bait but Rafa has played more matches than Fed this season. Apply the same logic to your own guy.

Colleen Says:

Giles,

I shouldn’t take the bait but Rafa has played more matches than Fed this season. Apply the same logic to your own guy.

Colleen Says:

sorry slow to post

Giles Says:

^^^ What logic???

Angel Says:

Nadal is so lucky Federer is not playing on clay until the French. Lucky Bastatd

Tennisfansince1976 Says:

@Giles you do know that whose twitter feed you posted is a communist so I’d take anything he says with a grain of salt. Also it is not our fault that is fed’s led regimen is superior to Nadal’s. time for Nadal to upgrade his ped regimen. It might have been cutting edge in 2005 but not anymore. Victory goes to the best medicated.
No need to wallow in the murky, dissatisfactory past, instead revel in the glorious present.

pitchaboy Says:

This has to hurt Nadal big time. The court was to his liking (slow), the conditions to his liking, the ball was spitting up off the court and yet, he could do nothing. He has lost 7/9 to Fed this year. The theory that Fed did great at AO because the court was “fast” is debunked. AO would have been done and dusted in 3 sets; but Fed was getting a monkey off his back.

Okiegal Says:

Roger is gaining on him. Head to head………Rafa 23 Roger 14….. I love this stat!!! Congrats to Fed fans on another title! Rafa did play better today than he did at IW……but still not good enough!!

Marina Erakovic @ErakovicMarina

At this stage, if he played Quidditch, he would probably win #fed @MiamiOpen

Leo Says:

Wow! Go Rog. I was expecting a Nadal victory, given the wear and tear, on Fed and the relatively easy breezy matches Rafa was going through. But Rog had another great match in him. If this had gone 3, don’t think Roger would have made it.

Get some rest… much of the season ahead. Plus Murray and Djoko will be chomping at the bit.

Daniel Says:

Ranking points for current top 6 minus clay points as of tomorrow:

1-Murray: 11.960 – 3160 (semis MC, Finals Madrid, Title Rome and Finals RG) = 8.800 pts
2-Djoko: 7.915 – 3610 (1st MC, Title Madrid, Finals Rome and title RG) = 4.305 pts
3-Wawa: 5.785 – 1000 (QF MC, R32 Madrid, R16 Rome and semis RG) = 4.785 pts
4-Federer: 5.305 – 270 (QF MC and R16 Rome) = 5.035 pts
5-Nadal: 4.735 – 2130 (title MC, title Barca, semis Madrid, QF Rome and R32 RG) = 2.605 pts
6-Nishikori: 4.310 – 1200 (Finals Barca, semis Madrid, semis Rome and R16 RG) = 3.110 pts
7-Raonic: 4.300 – 550 (QF MC, QF Madrid, R32 Rome and R16 RG) = 3.750 pts
8-Thiem: 3.385 – 910 (R64 Madrid, QF Rome and semis RG) = 2.475 pts

Rankings entering clay removing clay points from last year:

1-Murray 8.800
2-Federer 5.035
3-Wawa 4.785
4-Djoko 4.305
5-Raonic 3.750
6-Kei 3.110
7-Nadal 2.605
8-Thiem 2.475

Pretty much open. Murray will sure maintain his #1 ranking for Wimbledon. Wawa is 4000 pts behind and Djoko 4500. There is only 5000 pts on clay as they won’t play a small tourney.

Djoko can gain ground on clay and so can Nadal, as they usually are the ones who gain most points there, apart from Murray last year.

But as I mentioned before, if Djoko falter and so Wawa, there is a small chance Fed could be #2 by Wimbledon. He has more grass points from last 2 years than those 2 and Wimbledon takes that into account for their seeding. If Fed does well in this year Stuttgart and Halle (winning Halle) he could make ground.

Also Wawa would be challenging Djoko #2 rankings after RG if he shows some consistency. He has more pints minus clay so if he can wins a Masters he will be right there.

With first Quarter finished and clay ahead and Federer already out until RG, things can change a lot. We can even have Big 4 as top 4 in rankings for Wimbledon. Exciting times and this year promises a possible 5 man race for #1. We should know more after clay, with who will win RG and how Nadal and Wawa will perform. And the fight back from Djoko and Murray.

Fed will be pretty much watching from his home and depending on what happens he can reassess his season and what the targets will be after Wimbledon, which is his main target now.

Okiegal Says:

I am reading some comments about birth years……awww let’s don’t do that……that’s carrying things too far!! Lol Well on second thought I will play along…….after all age is only a number……..1945…….graduation 1963……but never fear Okiegal can still bust a move! 💃💃💃💃💃💃💃

Berghain Says:

@Daniel
Fed could take a wild card into madrid… Dont you think he should?

I know he said ‘probably till french’. I do think he will end up playing one clay court warm up before RG – Trust me.

Daniel Says:

Think maybe Bargain.

If he sees that he recover in time (1 month rest now skipping MC) and if his rivals misfortune continues he may play. Or skip Madrid and enter Rome a week before.

He pretty much doesn’t need to decide now, only in 1 month time. He wants to play RG as he skipped last year. So after MC we should know if he will play a warm up or not.

skeezer Says:

Fed is producing A LOT of gravy this year for the fans. Saweeet!
That is 4 in a row over Rafa @35.
More importantly, 1 Slam and 2 Masters, and the last 2 were slow and slower. Not bad, not bad at all.
Glad he is takin a break. Good choice👍
Congrats, go Fed!
GOAT.

Want to know who the idiot was who told Rafa to hit/serve to his FH?
Fail.

Markus Says:

I missed the match but happy with the result nevertheless. It feels like Christmas with all these bonuses, gravy and jolly good stuff from Federer. Has Federer ever had a greater start to the year than this one?

Berghain Says:

Skeezer I think its time we take Fed serious. Its not gravy anymore. He went hunting – killed the goose. Now its Dinner time. Only more to come. Not about a last hoorah but a new chapter. Yes gravy on the side – its a side dish. Ajust.

Berghain Says:

Daniel well I hope he plays madrid cause Ithink he could win it and those plus 1000 points would be great.

Leo Says:

@skeezer – Agreed. I lot of ‘saweeet’ gravy :-)

@Markus – I think his starts in 04-07, especially 06 was just as good.

Leo Says:

One thing I’ve noticed in Fed’s game is that when he gets into those longer exchanges against Rafa, he is not pressing as he used to. He is placing the ball very well and keeps patient for the right ball. In the past I’ve felt that he had low tolerance for some of those exchanges.

Berghain Says:

ESPN

“Coming into 2017, Roger Federer had lost 23 of 34 matches to Rafael Nadal.
In the sometimes heated discussion regarding the greatest men’s tennis player of all time, it was the only serious asterisk.

And now, three months into this young season, Federer has taken some positive steps toward erasing that qualifier. Three big, swift strides, to be precise.

Suddenly, 23-14 doesn’t seem so one-sided. And the GOAT argument doesn’t seem quite as complicated. Especially the way things have gone this season.

And for now, there is no GOAT argument.”

Nothing would please me more than seeing Rafa and Fed taking their GS tally to 15 & 19 respectively, by the end of Wimbledon 2017… These two really are the best!!!
