After Karolina Pliskova lost to CoCo Vandeweghe Wednesday in the US Open quarterfinals, Garbine Muguruza will officially overtake the Czech for the top spot on Monday.
Muguruza becomes the 24th different player to rank No. 1 and the fourth to hold the top spot already this year after Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber and Pliskova.
She’s also the second Spaniard to reach No. 1 after Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. And if Rafael Nadal can hold No. 1, both tours would have Spaniard on top for the first time in history.
The 23-year-old who lost to Petra Kvitova Sunday night in the fourth round, took to social media to comment on the honor.
