Federer Dominates Tiafoe In Basel, Del Potro Wed.; Thiem Wins In Vienna
Roger Federer opened play in his home Basel event posting a dominating 6-1, 6-3 victory over Frances Tiafoe. The two had just met last month at the US Open with the American pushing Federer to five, but Federer had no such issues with the teen today.
“Today I felt good from the beginning. I had a great first set and in the second set I had to reset and figure it out. Serving well alone is not good enough; you have to find yourself into the match on the return also,” Federer said.
Federer will meet Benoit Paire on Thursday.
Marin Cilic, Jack Sock and David Goffin also were winners. Cilic’s victory over Florian Mayer helped him clinch an ATP Finals berth.
Tomorrow, Juan Martin del Potro looks to keep his London hopes alive against Joao Sousa.
In Vienna, Dominic Thiem thrilled the home fans with a 6-4, 6-3 win over US Open quarterfinalist Andrey Rublev.
London hopefull Pablo Carreno Busta also was a winner but Sam Querrey blew four match points in a loss to Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
Alexander Zverev and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are in action Wednesday.
