Juan Martin del Potro ran his record to 4-0 against Dominic Thiem taming the Austrian 6-2, 7-6(7).
In a rematch of the US Open epic, Del Potro raced out to a quick break in the first set. He earned another break early in the second but the Argentine failed to close it out serving at 5-4.
Thiem pushed for the breaker, and led 6-4 and again had set point with Del Potro serving 6-7. But a pair of aces put Del Potro ahead and a double fault – like he did in New York on match point – sealed the win for Del Potro.
Del Potro moves on to face top seed Alexander Zverev who rolled past Ryan Harrison.
Del Potro leads Zverev 1-0 beating the German in three sets last fall in Shanghai. Zverev is seeking his first title since Canada.
In the other semifinal, surprising American Jared Donaldson battles US Open runner-up Kevin Anderson. Donaldson took the semifinal spot that was to be Rafael Nadal’s, but beat his countryman Feliciano Lopez. En route to his first ATP level semi, Donaldson lost just two points total on serve against Lopez.
“It’s a great start to the tournament so far,” Donaldson said. “I feel like I’ve played really well throughout the week, and I think it has showed a great maturity to my game and how much I’ve improved.”
Neither player has lost a set.
In the women’s semifinals, Stefanie Voegele meets Rebecca Peterson while in other it’s Daria Gavrilova against Lusia Tsurenko.
