Shortly after his loss today to Nikolaz Basilashvili, Roger Federer officially withdrew from next week’s event in Dubai which is home to his training base.

Federer posted on twitter, “It’s been great to be back on the @atptour, loved every minute playing in Doha once again. Raising hands A big thank you to the best and loyal team that helped me get here. Folded hands I’ve decided it’s best to go back to training and as a result, I’ve decided to withdraw from Dubai next week. 🏋🏽”

Following 405 days off the tour, the 39-year-old had to go back-to-back three set matches which left him with a sore shoulder.

“I didn’t expect it to be honest here in the shoulder because I have been serving the whole time, but that comes I think with the pressure and just, you know, in matches you just go that extra percent, 5%? I don’t know what it is,” Federer said today after the loss.

“I felt fine. You know, little stiff in the morning, but that’s totally normal I think.”
