Bautista Agut Downs Rublev, Will Meet Basilashvili For Doha Title
Roberto Bautista Agut eased past one of the hottest players on the tour in Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-3 Friday to reach the finals in Doha.
“This court and tournament is one of my favorites,” said Bautista Agut. “I played one of my best matches here in Qatar two years ago, and I hope I can win one more match tomorrow.”
The Spaniard will seek a second career title in Qatar against Roger Federer’s conqueror Nikolaz Basilashvili. He won the 2019 title.
The Georgian backed up his big win over the Swiss by upended American Taylor Fritz 7-6(3), 6-1.
“To reach the final means a lot,” said Basilashvili, who came into the Doha tournament on the back of a five-match losing streak. “I am playing well and I am relaxed. It’s great to play in front of a crowd and a nice atmosphere.”
Bautista Agut will seek his 10th career title while for Basilasvili, who finished 2020 0-9, he’s in his sixth final seeking a fourth trophy. Bautista Agut leads 3-1 in their head-to-head.
