Barty To Meet Former Australian Open Champion Kenin In Adelaide QFs
Things are heating up on the WTA tour already in 2022. Following a big comeback win over Coco Gauff, World No. 1 Ash Barty will take on former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin Friday in Adelaide.
Barty came from a set and a break down against Gauff on Wednesday while Thursday Kenin saved three match points to fight off Ajla Tomljanovic 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.
And that’s not the only quarterfinal battle of former Slam winners. Victoria Azarenka will collide with Iga Swiatek, as well.
Swiatek crushed US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 6-2. Azarenka, a 2-time Australian Open winner, eased past Priscilla Hon 6-3, 7-5.
“I’ve never had a problem,” Swiatek said of facing lefties. “I had a few opponents who were lefties when I was younger, so I guess on every level I’ve had chances to play against lefties and I don’t mind it, really.”
Azarenka beat Swiatek in their only meeting at the 2020 US Open.
American Shelby Rogers will meet Elena Rybakina and in a surprise unseeded quarter, Misaki Doi duels Kaja Juvan.
