14 Matches Was Enough For Ash Barty To Be Awarded WTA Year-End No. 1 For 2020
Ash Barty won her second straight year-end No. 1 award, the WTA announced on Monday.
Despite playing just 14 matches, and NONE since March, the Australian was awarded the year-end No. 1 ranking.
Barty, who did win Adelaide in January, finished 11-3 on the year but because the ranking points were frozen, Barty did not lose her French Open and other title points from 2019. So she stayed on top just ahead of US Open winner Naomi Osaka and Australian champ Sofia Kenin.
Even Bianca Andreescu, who didn’t hit a ball in 2020, finishing among the Top 10 at No. 7.
Some WTA players were less not thrilled with the WTA giving the top prize to Barty.
Really @WTA ?!? Big fan of Ash but come on…

The good news for Barty, after not wanting to travel for foreign countries, the tour will start in Australia for 2021. So that should make it easier for her to compete.
