Roger Federer took to instagram to congratulate Rafael Nadal on his incredible comeback win at the Australian Open today.

“What a match! To my friend and great rival Rafael Nadal. Heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles. A few months ago we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing. Never underestimate a great champion.

“Your incredible work ethic, dedication and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and countless others around the world. I am proud to share this era with you and honored to play a role in pushing you to achieve more, as you have done for me for the past 18 years. I am sure you have more achievements ahead but for now enjoy this one!”

Federer had never trailed Nadal in total Grand Slam titles until today.

During the event, the ESPN crew said that Federer had returned to hitting on the court. He is still hopeful of a return at Wimbledon, otherwise the 40-year-old could be back at the US Open.

What’s your problem Zed? Do you want to share it with us? May be we can help you?

Zed Says:

Madmax, no problem buddy, it is just my opinion of Fed’s abilities at this stage of his life. He was a great player but now he is over 40 and he’s simply past it.

You cannot expect the man to compete at this elite level in his 40’s. It’s not an attack on him, we all get older and we all find our physical capabilities change as we age.

From what I have heard, he keeps up the pretense of potentially competing further because he will be breaking sponsorship contracts if he declares retirement.

At some time or other he will have to put up or shut up. If he decides to put up and play at the elite level I am predicting he will get bageled. It’s not an unlikely outcome as it already happened. I can’t remember who he was playing but it was prior to him declaring all these injuries.

Zed Says:

I just looked it up, it was Wimbeldon 2021 against Hubert Hurkacz.

If he tries to come back I think this will happen again. Nothing against the man, he’s just too old to be playing at this level.

John Says:

@Madmax

You cant help this guy, best stay clear and don’t encourage him.
The Man is delusional.

Madmax Says:

Zed,

Thanks for the information, but honestly, really, you don’t have to like the guy, right? And if he wants to break his contracts, who cares Zed, certainly you shouldn’t, right? Just kind of relax into the fact that wow, we are in an incredible era Zed.

This might please you:

What world ranking is Roger Federer?
After missing the first Grand Slam of the year, the 40-year-old Federer slipped 13 places and now sits at 30th position with 1,665 points in the latest rankings.

Zed, did you know: The Swiss has been bageled just 6 times during his entire career which is an incredible feat and is also the LOWEST in the Big 3. So, let’s be clear here!

But you know what Zed, 40 years old, he is still in the top 30. Let’s see if both Rafa and Novak are in this position in 5 years time.

However, I really do not want to take away from the pure brilliance of Rafa, today, one day past, I am still in awe of this incredible athlete.

Not only that Zed.

Being bageled, isn’t it about resilience, in life? About Grit? (affective skills Zed), we are all influenced by this in life. So what I say with being bageled. Having been a life long supporter of Fed, this will continue, being a life long supporter Zed.

****John, I hear you about Zed, but I think he deserves a response.****

Also Zed: (it is more than once, but have a look at these stats!). Are you not impressed?

Roger Federer has been bageled only 6 times in his illustrious career. 4 of those came on Clay and twice he was bageled on Grass which included his most recent one. These have been the only 6 occasions when the Swiss Maestro had gone an entire set.

6 times in 20 plus years Zed! Roger Federer has played an astonishing 4,118 sets in his career so far, (2020).

WOW I SAY, WOW!

Further,

Novak Djokovic has NEVER bageled either of Nadal or Federer in his career. (pull me up on this Zed if I have this wrong).

Roger Federer has been bageled the least number of times out of the Big 3 and has served bagels against both Nadal and Djokovic.

Nadal: Rafael Nadal added three more bagels to his name at French Open 2021.

Number of Bagels served and received

Roger Federer has served 95 bagels in his career
The Swiss has been bageled just 6 times during his entire career which is an incredible feat and is also the lowest in the Big 3. The Swiss has himself served 95 bagels during his career.

There is plenty more Zed, but I am sure I have bored you to death right now.

So summarising this!

All of our favourites, have all been bageled. Federer (I think has had fewest).

Who cares though Zed? It is the coming back from the eyes of defeat, like Rafa yesterday, wowowowowowWOWOWOWOWOWOW!

Nadal, 2 sets down. This is more important than anything right now, I feel.

Madmax Says:

Federer holds the record for most number of bagels served at the Australian Open with 17 of them. He has a total of 46 bagels served to his name at Grandslam events.

(2020)

Rafael Nadal has played 3125 sets in his career. The Spaniard has served 112 bagels in his career, the most in the Big 3. However, he has also also received most number of bagels in the Big 3 with 15 of them.

(2020). Rafael Nadal, the King of Clay holds a record of 20 bagels served at the French Open. He has a total of 39 bagels to his name at Grandslam events.

The Serbian has served 95 bagels and has been on the receiving end of 10 bagels, with the most recent one against Rafael Nadal in the French Open 2020 final.

Okiegal Says:

Hey, Madmax let’s go have a bagel with strawberry cream cheese for breakfast! Lol Loved reading your stats! Have a good day!

Something is awry with TX site getting posts to go through. It won’t show them immediately and so I submit them again and they finally show up…. all of them! Sorry guys…. this is so annoying for the site to see them over and over again. I apologize. I’ll submit it once and if I don’t see it immediately, I’ll move on…..😩😩😩

Zed Says:

Guys, guys, guys, you have me all wrong. I admire Roger immensely.

Here he is at the end of a long and illustrious career and when I look at the list of the GREATEST OF ALL TIME tennis players he is right up there at number #2 !!! It’s an amazing achievement.

Over the next couple of years it is possible that Rafa will move past him into the second spot (Rafa currently sitting at number #3) but even if Roger ends up at number #3 that is still totally awesome!

I don’t think he will play any more but it will be really interesting to see how he goes against his much younger opponents.
