Serena Loses Coach Mouratoglou To Halep, Retirement Ahead?
The ubiquitous Patrick Mouratoglou announced today that he will become the full-time coach for Simona Halep going forward.
Mouratoglou has long been the coach of Serena Williams, and the move perhaps signals that the American great is closing in on a retirement. In his statement, Mouratoglou said Serena gave him the OK.
Serena hasn’t played since injuring her hamstring last summer at Wimbledon, and there’s been little talk or indication of a return.
Serena figures to miss the French and maybe return for one last Wimbledon and a final farewell at the US Open. Or we could have already seen her play her last match. She’ll turn 41 in September.
Meanwhile, Halep, who is now married and likely heading toward growing a family soon, test drove a few coaches before going with her past rival’s coach.
