Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Rublev French Open Winners; Alcaraz v Korda Fri. Night
The top seeds continued to roll at the French Open. World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev, who has a shot at No. 1 this week, cruised into his second straight third round in Paris blowing past Laslo Djere 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
“Today I think to be honest, Laslo was playing the better clay-court tennis,” the 26-year-old Medvedev told the crowd. “But I managed to fight and just put one more ball in the court than him and it was a very tough match, but I am happy to win.”
Medvedev’s countryman Andrey Rublev advanced past Federico Delbonis 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Casper Ruud also rolled dominating Emil Ruusuvuori 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Jannik Sinner came from a set down to defeat Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena in four sets. David Goffin, Holger Rune and Miomir Kecmanovic were also winners.
Stefanos Tsitsipas won the men’s match of the day topping Czech qualifier Zdenek Kolar 6-3, 7-6(8), 6-7(3), 7-6(7).
After a five-set comeback in his opener, Tsitsipas against struggled saving multiple set points in the second and fourth sets.
”He drove me crazy,” said Tsitsipas. “It was really frustrating. He was putting every part of his body behind the ball.
“It was an incredible effort.”
Gilles Simon, who was down a break in the fifth to Pablo Carreno Busta, extended his final French Open taking out Steve Johnson in straights. It was Simon’s 500th career win.
Tomorrow, is the first big seeded showdown of the event Carlos Alcaraz meets the man who beat him in Monte Carlo, Sebastian Korda. Alcaraz says he’s ready for these big type of tests in Slams.
“I’m still young, but I would say pretty experienced player now,” said Alcaraz on Wednesday. “Well, I feel comfortable playing on big stadium, big matches, playing on Grand Slam. As I said, physically I’m strong. Mentally I’m strong, as well.
“I think I’m ready to play these kind of matches in these situations, these tournaments. I’m ready, yeah.”
Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic along with Alexander Zverev are back on court.
Nadal meets US Open quarterfinalist Botic van de Zanchschulp on Lenglen. Djokovic is back on Chatrier to face Aljaz Bedene and Zverev faces American Brandon Nakashima.
