Kontaveit, Krejcikova Favorites At WTA Hamburg; Kasatkina Already Out
Just a small WTA 250 level event, but the Hamburg field is top-heavy with Anett Kontaveit, French Open semifinalist Daria Kasatkina and former French champion Barbora Krejcikova as the Top 3 seeds.
Aliaksandra Sasnovich is seeded fourth.
The tournament also boasts Wimbledon quarterfinalist Jule Niemeier, new Budapest champion Bernarda Pera, former Top 10 and 2021 runner-up Andrea Petkovic and once Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki.
Play already got underway today and second seed Kasatkina was upset in her opener by Katerina Siniakova in three sets.
Both Kontaveit and Krejcikova have struggled.
After a torrid run, particularly indoors, Kontaveit has lost four of her last five matches. She’s been dealing with long COVID.
Krejcikova’s spring clay campaign was derailed by an elbow injury, and since has gone just 2-4 in her return with only a Wimbledon third round to show.
Last year, Elena Gabriela Ruse won her first career title defeating Petkovic.
