Sakkari, Muchova Upset By Americans In Ostrava; Swiatek Friday
After just two rounds of play in Ostrava, just one Top 8 seed remains, and that is world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
Today, three more top seeds fell. World No. 4 Anett Kontaveit retired down 7-6, 1-0 to Tereza Martincova due to a lower back injury.
No. 4 seed Maria Sakkari would also bow out, losing to American upstart Alycia Parks 5-7, 7-5, 7-5. Parks, just 21, is into her first career WTA quarterfinal following huge wins over Karolina Pliskova and now Sakkari.
“I came out here not expecting anything, just playing my game, and it got me through the match,” said the 144th-ranked Parks.
“I was coming from Parma last week, and everyone said, how are you going to switch surfaces like that? But surfaces don’t really affect me. Indoor hard is my strength.”
Parks will now face former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova who didn’t have a hit a ball on Thursday after Belinda Bencic withdrew because of her left foot.
Parks’ countrywoman and fellow qualifier Caty McNally also scored a big win defeating Czech star Karolina Muchova 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
McNally sets up a clash with Iga Swiatek who she once beat in the 2018 French Open junior semifinals.
No. 5 seed Daria Kasatkina fell to Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets. Seeds on Thursday went 0-4 including the Bencic walkover while qualifiers went 2-0.
