Swiatek Moves Past McNally To Reach Ostrava SFs; Jabeur Upset By Liu In Monastir
Iga Swiatek was back in action after a day and the world No. 1 put a stop to the American qualifier Caty McNally’s run with a 6-4, 6-4 win to reach the Ostrava semifinals.
“It was definitely physical,” Swiatek said. “At the beginning of the second set I could feel my energy level went down a little bit. I’m pretty happy I got it back again and I could use my experience in my important moments, because Caty played really well.
“Tactically it was easier to prepare, because I know her game style. She’s playing differently to other players. But on the other hand, a lot of time has passed since we played last time. I knew she’d made progress and I had to be ready.”
The US Open champion will take a nine match win streak into the semifinals against Russia’s Ekatarina Alexandrova who ousted Czech hope Tereza Martincova.
It was a mixed day for Czech slam winners. Petra Kvitova was ousted by Elena Rybakina 7-6(5), 6-4 in a battle of Wimbledon winners. But Barbora Krejcikova knocked out American qualifier Alycia Parks 7-6(7), 6-3.
Krejcikova will now face Rybakina tomorrow in the semifinals.
In Monastir, Tunisia, local hero Ons Jabeur, a finalist at the last two Slams, was stunned by American Clare Liu
