Djokovic Wins 90th ATP Title, Tops Tsitsipas In Astana
Novak Djokovic won his third straight title Sunday taking the Astana crown easing past Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4.
The victory was Djokovic’s 16th straight at tournament level which includes titles at Wimbledon, Tel Aviv and now in Kazakhstan. It was also his 90th career title at the ATP level.
“I’m just very grateful and blessed to be able to play this well at this stage of my life,” Djokovic said after the 75 minute triumph. “You know, 35 is not 25. But I think the experience, probably, in these kinds of matches and big occasions helps as well to approach mentally in the right way.”
Djokovic never lost serve in the match and won 87% of his first serve points.
While Djokovic won’t return to No. 1 in the next month, his recent performance indicates he will be a serious threat if not the favorite next year for the top spot assuming he can play a full schedule.
“I could not ask for a better re-start of the season. I’m super-pumped and motivated to end the season as well as I have done these past couple of weeks,” Djokovic said.
Tsitsipas has now dropped eight of his 10 matches against Djokovic. The Greek star also falls to 0-9 in ATP 500 level finals winning just three total sets.
Following his fourth title of the year, Djokovic will now ready for his Paris Indoor title defense later this month before the ATP Finals.
