Novak Djokovic opened play at the ATP 500 event in Astana Wednesday in Kazakhstan and dominated Cristian Garin 6-1, 6-1 to reach the second round.

The Serb, who just won Tel Aviv on Sunday, has now won his last 12 matches in tournament play.

“From the start to the end, a great performance,” said Djokovic. “Playing in a new tournament, different conditions, the first match is never easy. Obviously you are looking to see how you are going to adapt, but I did it perfectly, really, played as well as I can. I just made him work and used every opportunity that was presented to me.”

Tomorrow, he’ll meet former US Open quarterfinalist Botic Van De Zandschulp. Djokovic needs a lot of work to qualify for the year-end finals next month.

Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced over Italian qualifier Luca Nardi in two tiebreakers.

“He’s a player that can play very well in the future,” said Tsitsipas of the 19-year-old Nardi. “I was impressed by his level, he was able to maintain that throughout the entire match. There weren’t any holes. I believe today he was able to sustain that level from the beginning to end, and that was extremely impressive.

“I was trying to do my best, I was trying to switch it up as much as I can, but it wasn’t as easy as I had it planned in my head. He made it difficult today.”

Andrey Rublev and Marin Cilic were also winners. Adrian Mannarino knocked out David Goffin in three. Goffin was a lucky loser replaced Holger Rune, then upset Carlos Alcaraz.

Emil Ruusuvuori topped Sofia champion Marc-Andrea Huesler. The Fin will now face Daniil Medvedev tomorrow.

Also tomorrow, Cilic will take on Karen Khachanov and Hubert Hurkacz collides with Alexander Bublik.

Staff, you are going from bad to worse, you are embarrassing yourself and TX with this kind of “knowledgeable” writing, Djokovic only need to stay top 20 in order to qualify and by winning Tel Aviv he basically secured top20, he #14 in the race to Turin atm and can go only up and not down.

Did you forget he is GS winner?

WB, whilst it is extremely unlikely, there is a scenario where he could miss out. I stress, it’s exteremely unlikely.

Novak’s sitting at #14 (as you said). If he wins Astana that’s 500 points which he gets all of since he didn’t play this tournament last year. That’ll bring him to 2,720 I think, which will put him ahead of Zverev who’s currently sitting at #7 in the Singles race.

Not saying Novak will be at #7 because Hurkacz, Fritz etc are all playing at Astana as well. Hurkacz is sitting at #9 and I think he’s very likely to improve that position.

The extremely unlikely thing that could happen is that something could go wrong with Paris at the end of October and he could lose the 1,000 points he holds from last year. Let’s say an injury or something prevents him playing at all.

If that happened but he had won Astana, he’d have 2,720 points minus the 1,000 from last year’s Paris so he ends up on 1,720. The current number #20 in the Single’s race is Shapovalov on 1,700 (who’ll probably improve on that) meaning that 1,720 would drop Novak out of the top 20.

Having said that, saying “Djokovic needs a lot of work to qualify for the year-end finals next month” is plain wrong or badly worded. Novak just needs to do well at Astana and Paris and he’s in.

He will do well at Astana and he will do well in Paris so he will be in Turin. When he plays in Turin he will win, that’ll bring him to 6 ATP finals matching Roger.

Someone please help me people, how many has Rafa won? Someone? Anyone?

Zed,
Last year points are irrelevant in ATP race to Turin, only this year points are calculated, so Nole isn’t losing the points for Paris last year, that’s why he is even already ticked as qualified, even if he doesn’t play anymore matches until WTF he will qualify.

If you check this link you’ll see that he is ticked, though I wouldn’t be surprised if finishes top 8 before WTF, depending on Astana and Paris results:

Ahh yes you’re right. My apologies, I was confusing Singles Ranking with the Singles Race.

Novak is the GOAT. Do not let the desperate and flailing Fedal Nation propaganda machine brainwash you. The world is indeed round and 2 + 2 does equal 4.
