Sakkari Rallies Past Collins In Guadalajara, Will Face Kudermetova Today For Last WTA Finals Spot
Seven of the eight berths in the year-end WTA Finals are set, and today the field will be completed.
Maria Sakkari and Veronika Kudermetova will meet for the final spot in the Fort Worth, Texas event which begins in nine days.
Yesterday, Sakkari stayed alive in the hunt rallying from a set down to defeat Danielle Collins 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Kudermetova took out Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 6-4. She’s 1-2 against Sakkari falling to the Greek at the Australian Open earlier this year.
“It was meant to be,” Sakkari said. “We both had very tough draws. It was not guaranteed that we were going to play each other in the quarterfinals. I think the passion, how much we want it, it got us to the point that we have to play each other just to get that one spot. It’s going to come down to not who wants it more, but who plays a better match tomorrow.”
