Venus Williams Out Of Australian Open; Swiatek, Raducanu, Osaka Also In Doubt
Following a teary loss to Jessica Pegula at the United Cup, Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the Adelaide 2 event due to a shoulder injury.
The world No. 1 hopes to be ready to defend her 2022 Australian Open title.
Forty-two-year-old Venus Williams officially withdrew from the Australian Open. Venus, a 2-time Australian Open finalist, had made the trip down under winning her opener but falling in the second round to Lin Zhu. Venus was given a wildcard into the Australian Open which has now been given to Kimberly Birrell.
Emma Raducanu turned her ankle in New Zealand leaving her Australian Open in some doubt.
And two-time Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka remains on the entry list but the superstar hasn’t played tennis since Tokyo at the end of September. The Australian Open draw takes place Thursday in Australia.
All four have won the US Open. And with Osaka in limbo, only Sofia Kenin and Victoria Azarenka are confirmed former champions in the Australian Open draw.
