Swiatek To Meet Raducanu In Stuttgart QFs; Sabalenka Ends Andreescu Comeback
On a big day of second round play in Stuttgart, US Open champion and teen superstar Emma Raducanu advanced to her first quarterfinal of 2022 getting through German lucky loser Tamara Korpatsch 6-0, 2-6, 6-1.
The win sets up a huge collision Friday between Raducanu and the streaking world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in a first tour meeting.
“Of course [Swiatek is] in great form, so it’s going to take a very high level from me to make it competitive,” Raducanu said. “I’m looking forward to going out there. She’s No.1 in the world, she’s won all the tournaments recently, so I feel like I’ve got no pressure.”
Swiatek has won her last 20 matches while the 18-year-old Raducanu is appearing in her first clay quarterfinal.
Anett Kontaveit continued her remarkable win streak which improved to 22 after squeaking by Ekaterina Alexandrova 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5). The Estonian failed to serve it out at 5-4 and then came from a mini-break down in the breaker.
Bianca Andreescu’s comeback came to a halt as 2021 Stuttgart finalist Aryna Sabalenka picked up a much-needed big win beating the former US Open champion 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
Paula Badosa also went the distance edging Elena Rybakina 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(4).
Maria Sakkari had to retire due to illness down a set and a break to Laura Siegemund.
Karolina Pliskova went down to the big-hitting Liudmilla Samsonova 6-4, 6-4.
Tomorrow in the quarters, Kontaveit will take on Sabalenka, Ons Jabuer battles Badosa and Samsonova gets Siegemund.
