“I’ve been playing great tennis the past few months,” Wu told the crowd after one of his biggest career wins. “Hopefully I can keep playing good. Thanks for all the fans, especially Chinese fans. I can hear you guys.”

The 23-year-old Wu won 32/48 (67%) first serves, 18/28 (64%) on second serves and broke serve three times. In the match, Shapovalov fired eight aces, hit eight doubles, won just 11/26 (42%) on second serves in this first-time meeting.

Tiafoe, ranked 14th, tallied five aces, won 28/33 (85%) first serve points and never lost serve while breaking four times. Tiafoe has now won two of three tour-level meetings when facing McDonald.

“I played really well today,” said Tiafoe. “I haven’t played in a couple of weeks and I’m really determined. I had a short Australian Open. I wanted a much better Australian Open, so I’m definitely coming in here hungry and I’m just happy I was able to put on a good show for you guys.”
